HS UPDATE 11.13.18: Regional Foursome Headed to Final Four

Central Valley avenged their earlier playoff loss in districts to Gonzaga Prep Friday night in the State Quarterfinals and Deer Park avoided a potential heartbreaker in a shootout as they joined big winners Kamiakin and St George's in heading to the State Final Four.

##  4A / 3A PLAYOFFS  ##

STATE QUARTERFINALS

11.9 - 4A - Central Valley 4-2 Gonzaga Prep :: The Bullpups grabbed the initial lead eight minutes in the aftermath of a breakaway. Erin Ewers got past a charging Clair Kaufman, but her effort caromed off the left post and was rolling just off the endline when Kyah Le came in and put it away from the acute angle into the far side netting. A corner from Dori Ames to the far post was nicely nodded home by Kailyn LaBrosse to even things up six minutes before the break and Mady Simmelink one-timed a ball from Sailor Watson past Eden Elliott four minutes after intermission for the lead. A corner at the hour mark tied things up when Olivia Lauffer's restart from the right curled in at the near post. Kaufman's attempt to catch it, however, instead saw the ball bounce off her hands and into the side netting. Four minutes later a loose ball amidst a scramble of players in the six rolled out to Maggie Ames, who knocked it home for the lead, and in the 68th her sister set up another, sending LaBrosse on another of several runs up the right. This time she found the lower near corner before Elliott could snare it.

11.10 - 3A - Shorewood 0-4 Kamiakin :: It was all over before the intermission. A corner kick nodded in by River Holle just two minutes in got the ball rolling. Then Maddie Morgan took over from there. She found Izzy Conover in the 13th to double the lead and scored back-to-back goals in the final six minutes of the period to pull away, allowing the Braves to use a lot of reserves in the second half.

"It’s been very fun and exciting for us during the regular season and moving through playoffs. And now we have the final four with back to back appearances for the Braves," said head coach Chris Erikson. "All the state teams have been talented and have played such competitive matches. In looking at rosters many of these teams are senior dominated, ourselves included.

"We hope to continue peaking, keep all healthy, and stay focused. Last year the members of the team hadn’t yet been to the final four. Having had that experience I feel there is a different sense of purpose for this final four. That sense of knowing more what to expect but also knowing it will take great performances on the field. And I always feel it takes a little luck."

STATE QUARTERFINALS

11.9 - 1A - Lakeside 1-2 (SO) Deer Park :: The games between the two rivals got tighter as the campaigned moved onward with a pair of three-goal wins during the season leading to a one-goal affair in the district playoffs and finally a contest decided in a shootout. They were locked in a stalemate for nearly an hour when Emmy Moore delivered a nice through ball that found Carmen Kiewert making a diagonal run into the box.  With 11 minutes remaining Lexi Torok tied things up with just the second goal for the Eagles against Deer Park this year; just the eighth allowed in 15 games against NEA opposition for Madison Sellars, who got a piece of the shot only to see it trickle in off the post. Sellars and Payton Williams, who also had a stellar season in goal, would take things to a shootout where a save from the Lady Stags keeper in the fourth round would prove the difference and complete a sweep of Lakeside in the most crucial of moments that could have proven heartbreaking amidst their perfect campaign to date. The match marked the first time this year in league and postseason play that Jessie Thomas did not tally, ending a 15-game scoring streak.

11.10 - 1A - Freeman 0-2 La Salle :: Hannah Pylant had two great saves to keep the game scoreless through the first half, but the hosts scored four minutes into the second half off a throw-in. The Scotties pushed for an equalizer but were unable to find an equalizer with La Salle icing the game with a counter in the final minute.

"It wasn't the result we wanted, but I'm still proud of this team," said head coach Dave Ellis. "This group advanced farther than any other team in the Freeman soccer program history, despite battling through a lot of injuries.  We'll build on this for next year."

STATE QUARTERFINALS

11.10 - B - Northwest Christian 1-5 St Georges :: It was a tale of two seasons for the Dragons, who started the season with a rough spell that saw them open with a pair of losses to Davenport and Northwest Christian before starting their current seven-game win streak. Lydia Bergquist put the hosts on the board first one a scramble at the near post following a corner from Madeline Christiansen. Bergquist scored again in the 31st from the top of the box, finding the inside of the right post as she drove into the penalty arc.

Another corner sent to the near post by Christiansen was nodded home by Cambrie Rickard five minutes before the break to push the lead to three. She would score her second in the 52nd driving in along the endline from the right and battling to put it in at the near post, and complete the hat-trick nine minutes later with a diagonal run with the ball into the area from the left before a nice finish out of the keeper's reach from the left edge of the six. A corner spoiled the shutout five minutes from time when it created a scramble inside the six. An attempted clearance in the crowded space came nearly straight up and went off the forehead of Sydney Frampton, ricocheting into the goal for the tally.
