Swept on the season by the other two NEA elites Deer Park and Lakeside by a combined tally of 13-3, it looked like Freeman would end up being in the third spot and taking the extra crossover game route to State. But as the saying goes, beating a team three times in a season is a tough task. Lakeside learned that the hard way in heartbreaking fashion as a 3-1 halftime lead proved not enough.

In a wild one the Scotties got on the board first when Aubrey Gregory got in the box and as she was confronted the ball popped to Phyllis Prosser, who knocked it home as the keeper's hand was stretching out to the ball. The hosts responded not too much later with an Ayanna Tobeck shot off the keeper's hands in the 15th and claimed the lead five minutes later when a through ball put Abbi McLellan onto goal. The star striker did it again on a long ball four minutes before break to push the lead to two for the Eagles. In the second half, though, the visitors clawed back into the match, scrapping for every ball and it proved crucial. Freeman standout Makayla Werner took the game in her hands, first finding Aubrey Gregory for a nice one-touch finish into the upper corner from about 18 yards to pull within one. Then, well, she left everyone on the pitch speechless. She claimed the ball deep in their own end not too far from the box and proceeded to drive the entire length of the field past several Lakeside players before firing from about 14 yards out. The Lakeside keeper did well to stop the effort, but the rebound fell right back to Werner, who promptly buried it into the empty net to even matters. She nearly won the game in regulation on a penalty with 10 minutes left only to see the ball soar past the upper right corner. The young squad featuring seven freshman starters went into overtime with belief and midway through the first period found the winner when Werner dished the ball to Alena Cochran near midfield. Driving toward her left she unleashed a left-footed strike from about 27 yards out that curled toward the back post and found its way in when the keeper misjudged the bounce and saw it pop up over her shoulder and into the back of the net for the victory.
