On Tuesday the University Titans shocked the top MCC 3A seed Southridge on the road with a shootout victory following a scoreless draw. The recipe seems to work well for them... as it was the same result Saturday against league foe Mead, earning an unexpected spot in the district final and a berth to state.
It was one of three shootouts on the day. Ridgeline was eliminated from the postseason by Walla Walla after another scoreless stalemate, and after an exciting 1-1 affair versus Kamiakin the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups moved onto the 4A final, claiming a state berth.

4A DISTRICTS
After a scoreless opening stanza, things began to heat up in the second. Moments after going down in a tackle Kate Christian got the ball for the visitors, turned and fired for the opening goal just minutes into the second half. Gonzaga Prep pushed and pushed looking for the equalizer that finally came with minutes remaining. Initially stymied by a defender at the right corner of the box, Grace Kalua regained possesion and cut inside, eluding that defender and an incoming second to enable her to dish it off to Erin Ewers. Ewers' first touch to the inside got away from her, but the defender was unable to hold possesion as she challenged her for it, switching it back to her right foot for a perfect shot that curled away from the keeper into the far side netting. They nearly claimed the win in regulation with a couple minutes remaining when a powerful Ewers was zipping in under the bar, but the keeper stabbed her hand up just in time to send it off the frame instead. In the shootout Mia Lewis came up big with a save on the opening attempt, and again in the third. Her counterpart also made a save in the third round, but a Kamiakin miss in the fourth sealed the tiebreaker victory for the Bullpups.

After a first half that saw few real looks for either side, the Panthers began creating more and more looks at goal only to see goalkeeper Aubree Carpenter deny them at every turn. She made several tip saves either over or off the crossbar, including one in overtime in which she had to reach back to keep the ball from dropping in under the crossbar. It looked like her heroics may be for naught when Mercedes Cullen denied the opening attempt of the shootout, but Mead's attempt in the opening round would clatter off the post. From there each side was perfect until Carpenter made the game-winning save in the sixth round.
