HS Daily - 3.20.17: Wenatchee tops champ Sunnyside in CBBN opener

Third-place finishers in the regular season a year ago, Wenatchee nabbed a 2-0 home victory Friday evening on the Columbia Basin Big Nine opening night against reigning regular season champion Sunnyside while Davis, runners-up last season, eeked out a 1-0 result against visiting West Valley, who were second from bottom in 2016.

In the Great Northern League openers, the bottom two from a year ago also earned wins. Cheney snared a win via shootout against defending champion Pullman on the road after a scoreless affair and Clarkston, last-place finishers a year ago, topped West Valley, 5-4, in an overtime decision.

In the Mid-Columbia Conference, both contests Friday were decided in overtime while Saturday's fixtures were starkly different as one was decided by a lone goal and the other was a one-sided meeting.

The surprisingly poor performances from the GSL 3A schools in preseason continued Friday with all three games against lower classification opponents not concluding in their favor. Mt Spokane was edged 3-2 by Medical Lake and Rogers - a day after getting the better of NC - was blanked 1-0 by Lakeside. Shadle Park, meanwhile, played to a 3-3 draw in Pullman, coming up short in a tiebreaker shootout. Ferris lost in a shootout to University, which finished last among the 4A contingent a year ago and Gonzaga Prep fell at home, 2-0, to Eastmont. Both sides were mid-table in their leagues a year ago.

On Monday, four GSL sides will get in one last warm-up before the season kicks off on Wednesday with a full slate.
