HS Daily - 3.23.17: North Central rallies to top Shadle

Opening day in the Greater Spokane League was filled with a slate of one-sided contests for the most part with the exceptions being a 1-0 decision for Ferris on a penalty against Gonzaga Prep and a rally from North Central to grab a 2-1 victory against rival Shadle Park at Joe Albi Stadium.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Highlanders looked like they were going to get the better of their foes in the early going and took the lead when Devin McGowan forced a turnover just outside the box and quickly scored for the lead in the 16th minute. They had another chance ring off the left post in the half.

North Central's difference maker, Aidan Chaparro, finally broke through for the Indians early in the second half when he drove out of the midfield into the box and cut back on his defender, creating contact to earn a penalty he converted moments later to level things up in the 48th.

Shadle nearly reclaimed the lead later in the half only to see another fantastic effort smack off the woodwork, allowing North Central to grab the victory when Pasquale Kelay put away a loose ball in the box with just three minutes remaining.

Earlier in the doubleheader at Albi, it was all Tigers as Lewis & Clark dominated the meeting with University thanks to a hat-trick from Brennan Murphy en route to a 5-0 win. Both assisted by Bailey Rosenau, Murphy struck in the 12th minute and again in the 20th for a commanding early lead. A free kick from Jared Mahaffey pinged around in the box four minutes before the break before being knocked home by Ethan Sieveke. Four minutes into the second half Murphy finished his hat-trick - the first in GSL this season - on a ball from Mehaffey. Tyler Koffinke rounded things out by putting away a rebound in the 65th.

Elsewhere, Jake Levine tacked a second half brace onto a one-goal halftime advantage to blank Mt Spokane 3-0 and Mead cruised to a 4-1 win at Rogers. Peter Weller doubled the lead just before halftime and pushed it to three from the spot at the hour mark. Another penalty made it four ten minutes later before Rogers got on the board in the 72nd.

The night wrapped up at Gonzaga Prep with a tight affair that went finished in favor of the visiting Saxons with Max Thompson converting a penalty in the 55th for the 1-0 Ferris win.
