INW College Recap - Week 5: Mixed results for INW teams amidst start of GNAC, NWC conference play

Conference powers Simon Fraser men and Western Washington women were tough opponents for MSU-Billings and Northwest Nazarene in the first week of conference play in the Division II GNAC while the Whitworth and Whitman men and women ended up with a mixed bag of results on the road as they kicked off conference play in the Division III NWC.

GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE - MEN 

Thursday, September 19 

Simon Fraser 2 :: 1 MSU-Billings 
Aodhan Brownlee found Chad Ward (Bozeman, MT / N Idaho College) inside the six 20 minutes into the contest for a sliding finish, but the conference champions top-ranked visitors rallied in the second half to claim the victory. MORE

Western Washington 2 :: 1 Northwest Nazarene 
The visiting Vikings jumped to the early lead against an injury-riddled Crusaders lineup, but the hosts answered in the 58th through Fredy Razo, who received a ball from Luke Broz (Boise, ID) behind the defense and beat the keeper. Outshooting the Vikings 16-8 in a dominant second half performance they just couldn't find the back of the net and ultimately saw a positive result slip away with just under three minutes left the Vikings narrowly got the ball over the line before defender Eli Peterson's clearance came.

Saturday, September 21 

Western Washington 0 :: 0 MSU-Billings
Eoian Hurley made three saves in the scoreless stalemate, making the defensive effort in from of him all the more impressive considering they played a man down since the 37th when Matt Brink (Billings, MT) was sent off. MORE

Simon Fraser 2 :: 1 Northwest Nazarene
The visiting top-ranked side fell behind for the second time on the road, but rallied to the win despite a tough fight from the Crusaders. Fredy Razo netted his second of the weekend when he nodded a bouncing ball from John DiLulo (Boise, ID) over the keeper 11 minutes in. They kept the advantage through to the break thanks to Ryan Foo stopping a penalty with a little under three minutes left in the half. The Clan, however, wasted no time after intermission, pulling even two minutes after the restart and found the winner in the 74th. MORE

Seattle Pacific 1 :: 0 Mary
Cody Lang (Spokane, WA) made four stops in the shutout performance, his third clean sheet in four games. MORE

Simon Fraser 0 :: 2 MSU-Billings 
Katlyn Lokay guided the Yellowjackets to the victory, collecting the ball on a corner and finding Heidi Greenback at the six for the opening tally in the 20th minute and then scoring herself on a scramble inside the six in the 78th minute to lock up the victory. MORE

Western Washington 3 :: 0 Northwest Nazarene 
The Crusaders gave up three in the first half and were never able to recover. MORE

Saint Martin's 0 :: 2 Central Washington
The Wildcats were led by a second consecutive brace from Danielle Brandli, who scored in the 17th and then put the ball into the empty net in the 62nd to secure the win. Kayla Lipston had five saves for the shutout. MORE

Saturday, September 21 

Western Oregon 1 :: 0 Central Washington
Kayla Lipston had a big performance in goal with eight saves, but the one ball that got past her in the 78th minute was all the visitors needed.

Simon Fraser 0 :: 0 Northwest Nazarene 
The Crusaders outshot the Clan 15-6 on the day and Argia Phillips (Meridian, ID) only had to make one save courtesy of the backs in front of her. MORE

Western Washington 4 :: 1 MSU-Billings
The fourth-ranked Vikings had complete control of the contest against the Yellowjackets, who were gifted their only goal on a ball sent back by a defender that was missed by the keeper and wound up in the back of the net. MORE

Whitman 0 :: 0 Willamette
The Missionaries were unable to find their first win of the year, but used a solid defensive performance that left Stuart Ellsworth with only having to make two saves for the shutout. MORE

Whitworth 1 :: 0 Linfield
The Pirates opened conference play with a narrow victory provided by Sam Engle in the 53rd minute on a ball from Spencer Wolfe. Shane Nishioka-Healy recorded five saves for the shutout. MORE

Puget Sound 3 :: 2 Pacific
The Boxers held the lead twice with Ian Farley (Spokane, WA) setting up their second in the 62nd minute, but the visitors rallied to grab the win.

Sunday, September 22 

Whitworth 2 :: OT :: 3 Willamette
The Pirates suffered a surprising loss, but nearly got the draw despite playing a man down since Balin Larson was sent off in the 39th minute. Sam Selisch had put Whitworth up in the sixth minute with a 15-yard finish off an Andrew French cross, but the Bearcats pulled even in the 33rd. In the 38th, Sam Mean found Andrew Flint, who struck from 18 yards to reclaim the lead, but a minute later Larson was sent off after a scrum with a Willamette player who only received a yellow. Whitworth maintained the lead for another half-hour before the hosts equalized and ultimately won in the 99th minute. MORE

Whitman 3 :: 2 Linfield 
For the first time this season the Missionaries scored more than once in the contest, and needed all three. Midfielder Junpei Tsuji scored the opener on a 35-yard free kick in the 21st minute and after a pair of Linfield goals put the hosts in front early in the second half Alex Barber made a great individual effort for the equalizer in the 58th. Ten minutes later Tsuji had another great free kick, finding Cooper Schumacher for the winner. MORE

Pacific Lutheran 2 :: 1 Pacific
Ian Farley (Spokane, WA) put the Boxers in front for the second time on the weekend, this time scoring in the 57th on a scramble in the box, but were unable to hold on again in falling to the Lutes.

Tiara Pajimola (Spokane, WA) struck from about 20 yards in the 21st minute and Andrea Stump made 12 saves as the Pirates played to the road draw. MORE

Whitman 2 :: 1 Willamette
The Missionaries fell behind in the 18th minute but found an equalizer through defender Brianna Brown three minutes before the break. Brown then found Kelsey Peck 12 minutes into the second half for the winner. MORE

Puget Sound 0 :: 1 Linfield 
Molly McCool (Bend, OR) provided the winner from the left side in the 28th minute.

Sunday, September 22 

Whitman 0 :: 1 Lewis & Clark
Emily Davis had four stops in the game for the Missionaries, but her fingertips just weren't long enough as the shot from the visitors in the 89th minute glanced in for the victory. MORE

George Fox 0 :: 5 Linfield
Tegan Grunwald had a goal and two assists, one of them to Molly McCool (Bend, OR) in the 26th minute to push the lead to three while Taylor Collinsworth (Bend, OR) did not have to make any saves for the shutout.

Whitworth 1 :: 0 Willamette
Tiara Pajimola (Spokane, WA) scored her sixth of the season on a breakaway in the 63rd minute of the contest. Willamette outshot Whitworth 16-6 on the day, but Andrea Stump only had to make two saves. MORE
