INW Collegiate Recap - Cascade & Frontier Conferences in full swing entering Red Lion Challenge

The Red Lion Challenge returns for a second year to Spokane's Dwight Merkel Sports Complex Sept 6-7
Competition between the two northwest NAIA conferences, the Cascade Collegiate Conference and Frontier Conference, is already underway as the two leagues head into the second edition of the Red Lion Challenge this weekend. On Friday and Saturday four men's teams and six women's sides will square off in a series of neutral site matches at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex in north Spokane.

The two conferences have already begun to clash with the Great Falls women falling 3-2 on the road against Eastern Oregon on Labor Day and Carroll College defeating the visiting College of Idaho 2-1. The Rocky Mountain College women topped Evergreen State 3-1 while on the men's side RMC played to a 1-1 draw with the Geoducks

The South American duo of Colombian Louis Torres and Brazilian Renan Zampieri scored in the first half for a 2-1 lead at the break and Bassam Mahmoud of the Sudan clinched the road victory midway through the second half. MORE

Tanner Wolff (Billings, MT) ripped a 30-yard strike in the 16th minute that helped lead the visitors to the draw with the Geoducks pulling even 10 minutes later. MORE

The rebound of a Sarah Hicks (Boise, ID) corner kick in the 24th minute came to Reilly Coyle (Boise, ID), who played it on to Jamiece Yizar (Pocatello, ID) for a flick-on for the opening Yotes goal. Macie Netz (Great Falls, MT), however, propelled the hosts to the win with a pair of goals in an eight-minute span. She finished a cross from Natalie Johnston in the 69th minute and put away a cross from Christa Saur (Boise, ID) in the 77th.  MORE

The visitors took the lead just under four minutes into the contest courtesy of Therese Hagbyhn, who stole the ball and beat the keeper, but the Geoducks needed only a half a minute to answer back. The two remained deadlocked until Hagbyhn found Jaelene Zygmond (Billings, MT) in the 63rd to reclaim the lead and scored again herself in the 77th. MORE

Scoreless at halftime, the two teams went back and forth in the second stanza with freshman Sydney Nelson (Spokane, WA) scoring the opener four minutes in and Great Falls pulling even 16 minutes later through Danielle DeLaVina in the 65th minute. But before the minute even concluded, EOU reclaimed the lead when Tori Fedora struck. The lady Argos did not give up and found a late equalizer via Ashley Todd (Cardwell, MT). Four minutes into overtime, however, Erika Whitehurst (Bend, OR) netted the deciding tally. MORE

It looked like the game was going to finish in a scoreless stalemate as Carroll just could not break down the Biola defense, but with two minutes left a cross from Cassie Baldwin was unintentionally redirected for an own goal, giving the Saints the victory. MORE

Ian Farley (Spokane, WA) paced Pacific University to the overtime victory, scoring twice in a four minute span to rally the Boxers to the lead. His first was a 10 yard effort in the 75th off a long ball, and headed the second home in the 79th. MORE

The Yotes thought they may have a had a chance at an upset against the fourth-ranked side in Salt Lake City with a 1-0 lead with over 20 minutes remaining courtesy of a late first half goal from Joseph Bolin (Payette, ID) a minute before the break. MAN, however, tied it up in the 70th and claimed the lead in the 77th, holding on the for the win. MORE

The game went to the second half scoreless before Bethesda scored twice in a two minute span to claim a two-goal lead in the 65th minute. John Fronk (McCall, ID) found Nicko Moreno (Idaho Falls, ID) to pull the Yotes within one in the 77th but it was not enough.

Sydney Nelson (Spokane, WA) helped break the deadlock in the second half when she set up Mauriana Gonzalez. Tori Fedora combined with Erika Whitehurst (Bend, OR) to set up Haley Hill (Boise, ID) in the 80th and struck herself less than two minutes later on a ball from Annie Konrad (Boise, ID) for a three-goal advantage. Nelson helped cap the game, setting up Kristin Watkins in the 87th. MORE

The Yotes rallied twice before finding the winner in the extra session. In the 38th Devhan Morgan (Nampa, ID) picked up her first equalizer when she headed in a free kick from Katy Radko (Meridian, ID). The pair repeated the feat in the 67th to level the match again and Jamiece Yizar (Pocatello, ID) scored the winner on a breakaway six minutes into overtime. MORE

RED LION CHALLENGE 2013 SOCCER - Dwight Merkel Complex

Four men's and four women's teams met on individual weekend's last year in Spokane. The event this year will see them return on the same weekend in two full days of action at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex Friday and Saturday. Three of the four men's teams are returning with the College of Idaho joining Northwest Christian to face the Frontier duo of Rocky Mountain and Great Falls. Three teams are also returning on the women's side with the Frontier duo of Carroll College and Rocky Mountain being joined by Great Falls to face a new set of CCC opponents in Northwest University, Northwest Christian and the College of Idaho. Returning Players
Nine players are returning to the greater Spokane-CDA corridor for the Red Lion Challenge. Spokane natives Jessica Geibel, Sidney Batkoff, Kelli Lessmeier, Caitlyn Walter and Carissa Yedica will be representing Carroll along with Coeur d'Alene product Lauryn Grossman while Great Falls will feature the Spokane duo of Kandace Leliefeld and Kendra DeJanovich. Annie-Brynn Stauffer also returns to the Lilac City as a member of Northwest University.
