Big Sky Plus - 10.7.17 DI Round-Up: Gonzaga, Santa Clara Win Big Before Sunday Showdown

In the Big Sky Conference the Eastern Washington ladies kept their lone unbeaten status intact with an overtime victory on the road at North Dakota and Montana also picked up a narrow win, 1-0, against Sacramento State. The bigger results on the day, though, came in the West Coast Conference where Gonzaga rolled to a huge 6-2 victory against visiting San Francisco ahead of Sunday's home contest against Santa Clara, who won 4-1 in Portland with a pair of goals from Spokane native Kelsey Turnbow.

DI Results from Thursday/Friday...

BIG SKY ROUND-UP ####

Eastern Washington 2-1 OT North Dakota
The Eagles grabbed an early lead just four minutes into the contest when Emma Vanderhyden and Allison Raniere combined on a corner to set up Aimie Inthoulay. They held the advantage for over an hour - thanks to a penalty saved by Emily Busselman (Richland, WA / CC Spokane) 10 minutes before the break - before the hosts pulled even in the 67th. The match would run to overtime where Vanderhyden would register her first goal, scoring just over five minutes into extra time for the win.

Sacramento State 0-1 Montana
In a game full of shots - 33 with 10 saves and six blocks - it came down to one opportunity created by a free kick in the 83rd minute. The restart from Chanelle Pederson found the head of Ashlee Pedersen (Spokane, WA) and made it's was through three other players before returning to Pedersen, who cut the ball back into the six from the left endline to an onrushing Alexa Coyle (Bozeman, MT) for the winner. Claire Howard finished with four saves for the shutout.

Idaho State 1-2 Southern Utah
By the end of the first half, the odds were stacked against the Bengals as they headed to the locker room down two players (both defenders) as Lauren McGahie was sent off in the 17th minute and Jennifer McCaw in the 34th. Despite the challenge, they kept the hosts off the board until the 52nd minute and managed to score an equalizer in the 57th when Brooke Kortekaas tallied on a ball from Makena Bambei. The Thunderbirds, however, found the winner eight minutes from time.

Idaho 0-1 Northern Colorado
The struggles continue for the Vandals, who have now gone four games into the conference campaign without a win at 0-3-1 since ending their non-league campaign with a thrilling 5-4 win against ranked Memphis and a 6-0 blowout of a short-handed Nevada squad that started the game with nine players and finished with seven due to injuries.  Northern Colorado scored the game-winner in the 39th minute.

Northern Arizona 0-1 Portland State
