HS Daily - 10.27.17: Lakeside, Deer Park Survive Scares

The top two seeds in the Northeast A League nearly found themselves in the losers portion of the 1A district bracket Thursday evening, but a goal two minutes into overtime put Deer Park through and a dominant Lakeside squad survived penalties thanks to three saves from Payton Williams after a thoroughly one-sided affair that went scoreless.

In the Great Northern League, however, West Valley topped higher-seeded Cheney in a one-sided contest after having lost to the Blackhawks last week. Clarkston rolled to a win against Pullman in the other 2A playoff match.

In the other half of the upcoming 2A crossover portion of the bracket, the CWAC saw the top two seeds fall in the second round of districts. Four-seed East Valley (5-4) stunned top seed Ellensburg via a shootout for a 2-1 win and Ephrata (7-2) topped Selah (8-1) in the other contest, sending Ellensburg and Selah into the loser-out contest.

PLAYOFF RESULTS

1A - Freeman 1-2 OT Deer Park
In a match full of offense, it was a tight contest with goalkeeper Madison Sellars and Hannah Pylant each reaching double-digits in saves. Jessie Thomas put the Stags on the board two minutes before the break via Emmy Moore and Freeman tied things up with nine minutes remaining to send the match to overtime. Thomas wasted no time leading the hosts to the win in extra time, finding Carson Gracie-Allen two minutes in for the victory.

1A - Medical Lake 0-1 SO Lakeside
In a thoroughly one-sided contest goalkeeper Payton Williams saw more action in the shootout than she did in the match. She made three saves in the   tiebreaker to help lead the Eagles onto the next round. At the other end Taylor Cannon was quite busy in the contest and made several outstanding saves to keep the Cardinals in the match. She also made one stop in the shootout.

2A - Pullman 0-4 Clarkston
Taylen Wohl scored in the 17th and Mackinzie Packwood set up Maddie Hoffman five minutes later to double the lead. Corney Bogar scored in the 24th to make it three before the break. Packwood scored the final goal in the 52nd via Wohl. Katelyn Bittle recorded the clean sheet.

2A - West Valley 3-0 Cheney
Just over a week after falling 4-2 in Cheney, the Eagles fight the right answers for the postseason meeting. Madeline Liberg scored the lone goal of the first half with seven minute remaining and Abby McConnell scored twice in the second half, doubling the advantage after five minutes and locking things up with seven left on the clock. Kellie Fitzpatrick finished with the shutout in goal.

2A - Ephrata 1-0 Selah
Mya Spencer scored the lone goal for the visitors in the upset result.
E: Mya Spencer

2A - East Valley [Yakima] 2-1 SO (4-3) Ellensburg
The regular season champs got on the board 10 minutes when Heyley Cantu converted a penalty. The visitors almost tied it up in the 47th with a penalty of their own on a handball only to see it miss high, but would later get that equalizer via Kayla Gout off a corner in the 65th.
