Gameday: Whitworth Splits Sunday; Ladies Back Atop NWC

Eleven goals in two completely different contests saw the Whitworth women power past Pacific in the opener 5-1 Sunday afternoon and the men fall in heartbreaking fashion in a three-goal frenzy in the final five minutes against Pacific Lutheran that saw the Pirates go in front late only to give up two before the clock hit zeros.

Though they controlled the contest, things started slowly for the Bucs, who led 1-0 at the break on a penalty converted by Katie Bischoff (Spokane, WA) in the 16th minute after Jennifer Loehner (Spokane, WA) was taken down in the box.

Momentum picked up in the second half when Bischoff fed Michele Whan in the 57th minute and then Leah Corra scored just three minutes later. Coby Yoshimura tallied in the 74th to push the lead to four. The Boxers tallied their lone goal in the 85th to spoil the shutout with Kara Need finishing out the scoring with a penalty less than a minute later.

The ladies, at 10-1-1, remain in first after moving back atop the league table Saturday with their 2-0 win over George Fox after Pacific Lutheran had lost midweek against rival Puget Sound. PLU, though, sits just one point back after a 2-0 win Sunday.

The men's contest was a bit of a tight affair in the early going as well, but Micah Weller (Cheney, WA) broke through with a 15-yard effort in the 27th. The Lutes spoiled the Bucs' confidence just before intermission with a goal in the 44th.

A second assist from Jonah Snyder set up Kyle Cacoyannis in the 85th and it looked like the Pirates were headed to a sixth consecutive win, but Jackson Moore (Spokane, WA) helped set up an equalizer two minutes later and Joe Sammartino (Boise, ID) knocked in the game-winner with 39 seconds left.

The match was a battle for second as both were chasing 8-1-2 Willamette. The win keeps PLU (7-2-2) within three points, but the loss essentially eliminated the 6-4-1 Pirates from contention as they now sit seven back with three games left.
