HS Daily - 10.23.17 GNL/NEA Edition: Deer Park Finishes Second with Win Over Freeman

The final week of play in the Northeast A League was a busy one with three consecutive gamedays, which saw the showdown for the second seed between Deer Park and Freeman play out.

Both won on Tuesday, though the Stags had to rally and earn the result via a shootout against Riverside while Freeman cruised to a win in Newport. The following night the two squared off in a tight contest that saw Deer Park prevail on a goal with two minutes remaining to move even with Freeman in the table.

The week closed out with Freeman winning at Riverside, but Deer Park took the second seed with a dramatic overtime comeback win at Newport.

In the Great Northern League, West Valley's bid for a higher seed fizzled out over the course of the week. Their four-game win streak gave way to three defeats last week as they fell at Cheney, at home to rival East Valley and on the road against last-place Pullman.

Round-up of the action for October 17-21

In a game that looked like a rout, things took a dramatic turn in the end with Makinzie Packwood scoring three goals for the Bantams in the final 10 minutes with goals in the 70th, 75 and 78th, but it was not quite enough as the Knights had built a significant lead. Chloe Gellhaus set up two early goals from Kailee Hance-Brown in the ninth and Kaitlin Harvey in the 13th. Harvey scored again five minutes later for a three-goal lead at the break. Kelsy Ross pushed the lead to two in the 61st, but Benson struck five minutes later and Kailey Estrellado tied things up in the 73rd. The match went to overtime and nearly went to a shootout before Harvey connected for the winner via Ross with two minutes remaining.

Exactly a month since their last two-goal contest, the Greyhounds scored once in each half to build a two goal lead, getting goals from Hailey Talbot in the 23rd and Peyton Teevens in the 61st. Akylah Beitey scored two minutes later, but the Eagles were unable to find another.
