HS Daily - 11.03.17: Deer Park Claims District Title

In a handful of playoff contests Thursday evening, Deer Park posted the lone lower seed to prevail, downing regular season Northeast A League champion Lakeside in convincing fashion to win the district playoff title and secure a spot in the state tournament.

Lakeside's postseason will continue in the regional crossovers with Caribou Trail opposition, hosting Cashmere. Freeman, which blanked Medical Lake, will travel to Leavenworth to take on CTL regular season and district playoff champion Cascade, which finished third at state a year ago.

Meanwhile, Mt Spokane narrowly topped North Central, avenging their regular season defeat, and to reach the final match for the second 3A seed to state. They will face Southridge, who fell to regular season MCC champion Kamiakin in the regional final. The Braves cruised to a big win to earn the first spot in the state tournament. Though Southridge was not as successful this season in league play as last year, the Suns were state finalists a year ago.

PLAYOFF RESULTS

3A Regional Playoff - North Central 0-1 Mt Spokane
After a lengthy stalemate defender Emily Williams broke the deadlock on a penalty. NC goalkeeper Payton Flannery made one of her eight stops in the game on the spot kick, but the ball rebounded off the save and Williams knocked it home on the follow-up opportunity. Averie Carlsen and Anna Boyer split the shutout for the Wildcats.

3A Regional Final - Southridge 0-5 Kamiakin
Five different players scored for the Braves in the win with Maddie Morgan and Britney Donais each getting a goal and assist each. A through ball from Donais created Morgan's opener in the eighth and a long strike from Aaliyah Valladares doubled things five minutes later. Morgan and Mikayla Hunter combined to set up Kaeri Ward to finish the scoring for the half. A long shot from Emma Johnson pushed it to four two minutes into the second half and Donais capped things via izzy Conover. Grace Wilbur recorded the shutout. [picture: @kamiakinbraves]

1A District Playoff - Medical Lake 0-2 Freeman
Macy Luhr set up Claire Love for the opening goal four minutes into the contest and Brynn Van Orden created some insurance in the 20th on a goal from Kylie Nelson. From there Hannah Pylant kept the clean sheet to keep the playoff run going for the Scotties.

1A District Final - Deer Park 3-0 Lakeside
Four minutes before the break Emmy Moore put the Stags on the board. Then four minutes after she added a second. Jessie Thomas set up Lily Pierce in the 48th to grab a commanding advantage in the 48th as Deer Park claimed their ticket to the state tournament with their first win over the Eagles in three tries, though the second was a shootout decision.
