HS Daily - 11.08.17: Kamiakin Rolls & Deer Park Rallies to Advance

Kamiakin cruised to a 3A state tournament opening round win at home against Mountain View Tuesday evening while fellow MCC side Chiawana was knocked out of the 4A tournament in a close contest by Big 9 regular season champion Wenatchee.

Spokane sides also saw split results on opening day. Deer Park rallied for a 1A tournament win against visiting Cle Elum-Roslyn, the second-place finishers of the SCAC West. Mt Spokane, meanwhile, dropped a 1-0 decision on the road against Metro district runner-up Lakeside in the 3A tournament.

PLAYOFF RESULTS

4A - State Rd 1 - Chiawana 0-1 Wenatchee - Apple Bowl
In a rare scoreless game for Summer Yates, her career came to a close as the Riverhawks were blanked on the road by the Big 9 champions. Locked in a lengthy stalemate, the Panthers snatched the win four minutes from time on a goal from junior Jaden Griggs.

3A - State Rd 1 - Mt Spokane 0-1 Lakeside - Sammamish HS
The Wildcats were eliminated in the opening round in a tight contest in which a free kick from Francesca Sheppard nine minutes into the second half was the difference. Freshman goalkeeper Ashlyn Ryan kept Mt Spokane off the board in the shutout performance.

3A - State Rd 1 - Mountain View 1-4 Kamiakin - Lampson
Thirty-five seconds is all it took for Kamiakin to take control of their playoff opener. Maddie Morgan found Britney Donais for the lead in the opening minute and then tallied herself in the 10th to double the advantage. Olivia Fothergill put the visitors on the board in the 17th for a one-goal difference between the two at the break. Four minutes into the second half, however, Kaeri Ward pushed the lead back to two. Then Donais tallied her second of the night just shy of the hour mark. With the result locked up goalkeeper Grace Wilbur put a stamp on the night with a penalty save in stoppage time for the Braves.

1A - State Rd 1 - Cle Elum-Roslyn 1-3 Deer Park - Spokane Falls CC
Sophomore midfielder Grace Jackson put the visitors on the board two minutes in. Jackson and her teammate striker Grace Terrill continued to present issues for the Stags with their pace, but the defense did well enough to stymie them in the box and Madison Sellars did the rest. The Warriors, however, had difficulty at the other end containing Emmy Moore and Jessie Thomas as they weaved around and through the defense much of the game. It was Thomas, though, who would prove to be their nightmare. A shot from well out on the left flank two minutes into the second half evened things up when goalkeeper Marisa Del Gaizo mishandled the ball. A couple of quick passes led to a quick strike from Thomas in the box at the hour mark to put the Stags in front and seven minutes later a ball out of the midfield from Lily Pierce set up the third. The diagonal ball put Thomas in a race behind the back line with Del Gaizo, cutting with the ball past the sliding keeper and finishing into the empty net.
