HS Daily - 11.09.17: CV, University to Clash Again; West Valley Moves On

Valley rivals Central Valley and University both picked up state tournament opening round victories Wednesday evening at Spokane Falls CC to move on to a second round match-up against one another. Meanwhile, out in the valley the Eagles rolled to a 4-1 win against Lynden to keep West Valley's postseason run going after finishing fourth in the GNL this season.

PLAYOFF RESULTS

4A - State Rd 1 - Sumner 1-2 SO (7-8, 10 rds) Central Valley - SFCC
The visiting Spartans, 11-3-0 second place finishers in the South Puget Sound League grabbed the initial lead on a shot from the left side by Larberg in the 12th minute. As the game began to turn heavily into the Bears' favor, they pulled even with three minutes remaining in the half when Megan Robertson put away a loose ball. After an early Sumner corner was headed off the crossbar, the second half was thoroughly one-sided in for the hosts, but the Bears were unable to find a winner against the stingy Spartan defense, leaving things to a shootout to decide who would advance after an additional 10 minutes of extra time. Despite a pair of stops by AJ Crooks (doubling her tally for the night), the tiebreaker also went extra rounds with a pair of attempts from Bears players going wide and high. During sudden death every player hit the back of the net until the 10th shooter from Sumner skied her attempt well over the bar, allowing Bears to advance on the next shot 8-7. Robertson, also Monday's star against University in the district final, was coincidentally the 10th and final shooter for the Bears to earn the win.

4A - State Rd 1 - West Valley (Yak) 0-2 University - SFCC
In a rather tight contest, the two sides went nearly an hour before Amanda Gerard, back from injury, scored her first of the season to put the Titans on the board with a finish from about 10 yards out on the right side. Seven minutes later she added a second for some insurance, nodding in a corner from Kelsey Crosby in the 65th minute. Madi Szafransky took care of business in goal with a few key saves in the match to record the shutout.

2A - State Rd 1 - Lynden 1-4 West Valley (Spo) - WVHS
Four different players scored for the Cinderella side, which kept its amazing postseason run rolling. The fourth-place finishers from the GNL got on the board 14 minutes in when Madeline Liberg set up Chelsea Koker. Six minutes into the second half she scored herself with what ended up being the game-winner and three minutes later Frankie Schade pushed the lead to three. Sierra Smith put the visitors on the board in the 62nd and Akylah Beitey capped the victory with a tally three minutes from time.

2A - State Rd 1 - Clarkston 1-2 Columbia River - Kiggins Bowl
The Greater St Helens League hosts got on the board 15 minutes in on a tally from freshman Ava Greer and were in front at the break. Makinzie Packwood tied things up for the Bantams on an assist from Anna Sharp in the 46th minute, but the Chieftains restored the lead via freshman Jissel Valencia-Mendez just four minutes later with what held as the game-winner for the side coached by former Spokanite Filomon Afenegus (North Central HS).
