HS Daily - 11.13.17: Area Sides Advance to State Semis

A team from eastern Washington will be making a trip west later this week for the state semifinals in nearly every classification with Central Valley (4A), Kamiakin (3A), West Valley (2A) and both Saint George's (B) posting victories over the weekend. A side from central Washington is guaranteed to play for the 1A title with Cascade and La Salle facing one another in their tournament.

Nearly every quarterfinal match-up was a thriller on the weekend with all but one being decided by one goal. After a 4-0 district title win earlier in the week, the rivalry showdown for CV against University was a much different affair in the state tournament with a second half goal deciding the outcome. Kamiakin, meanwhile, needed overtime down at Lampson to move forward and West Valley (Spokane) rallied from two down to win in a dramatic overtime result, continuing a fantastic postseason run from an Eagles squad that finished the season fourth in the Great Northern League. Deer Park was eliminated in a close 1A contest by La Salle while in the B tournaments St George's blanked their visiting opponents in contrasting fashion with the girls winning 1-0 and the boys 4-0.

PLAYOFF RESULTS

Friday, November 10

B Boys - State Rd 1 - Life Christian Academy 0-4 St George's - Gonzaga Prep HS
It was the Mitch Ward show right from the beginning as the standout senior roamed the entire pitch, dominating play offensively and defensively. And he scored all four goals. The first came 10 minutes in and was followed by another two minutes later on a ball from Noah Galow, who found him again in the 34th to make it three before the break. Ward tallied another at the hour mark and Ethan Johnson finished out the game for a shutout with minimal work.

B Girls - State Rd 1 - Liberty Bell 0-1 St George's - Gonzaga Prep HS
A flukish goal 11 minutes in proved to be the difference. Cambrie Rickard got the winner off a shot that was partially stuffed by a defender on impact, popping the ball up from about 25 yards out. As it fell visiting goalkeeper Lauren Ochoa made a fantastic leap to reach it, but the trajectory of the ball perfectly slipped between the smallest of gaps between her outstretched hand and the crossbar. Cate Caporicci took care of matters at the other end to keep the shutout.

The St George's girls are playing Brewster, the regular season champion (12-0-0) of the Central Washington League and while the boys are facing Prescott.

1A - State Rd 2 - Deer Park 1-2 La Salle - Marquette
La Salle grabbed the lead seven minutes into the contest, but Jessie Thomas tied things up for the Stags in the 22nd minute on an assist from Lily Pierce. midway through the second half Kamryn Fiscus, who set up the opener, scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute for the hosts.

Saturday, November 11

3A - State Rd 2 - Lakeside 1-2 OT Kamiakin - Lampson
After a scoreless first half Bela Nicacio found Aaliyah Valladares for the opening tally in the 48th minute. The Braves looked headed to the next round, but the celebrations were put on hold when Jose Barton struck for the equalizer two minutes from time. Lakeside nearly grabbed the victory in overtime, but a penalty put off the crossbar in the first period of overtime proved fortuitous for the Braves, who scored the winner in the final moments when Valladares found Britney Donais for the golden goal. It was her third consecutive playoff match with a goal. Kamiakin is playing Mercer Island, the KingCo 2A/3A regular season runner-up (10-1-3), in the state semfinals.

2A - State Rd 2 - Port Angeles 3-4 OT West Valley - WVHS
Chelsea Koker has been a force for the Eagles all season long, but on Saturday her name was nowhere to be seen on the scoring summary after the game. No worries, though, as Abby McConnell, Frankie Schade and Madeline Liberg have been on a tear in the postseason as well. Down two after just seven minutes in a Port Angeles advantage that held through halftime, the Eagles mounted a massive rally in the second half. McConnell scored her fourth goal of the postseason in the 48th minute on an assist from Liberg, who tallied her third helper of the playoffs. Akylah Beitey scored in a second consecutive game to tie things up in the 53rd. Then McConnell found Schade for her fourth of the playoffs to put WV in front with eight minutes left. The excitement was dampened though when the visitors struck with a minute remaining to send the match to overtime. Schade struck again six minutes into extra time via Liberg to send the Eagles onto the state semifinals. In the state semifinals West Valley is playing Liberty, the KingCo 2A/3A regular season champions (11-2-1) and District 1/2 playoff champions.

4A - State Rd 2 - University 0-1 Central Valley - Joe Albi
Similar to Monday's meeting, the Bears controlled the match against their rivals, but goalkeeper Madi Szafransky made several nice saves to keep CV off the board. Megan Robertson, who had three goals during the season, continued her sizzling postseason form, which started innocently enough with just an assist in their 4-0 opener against Walla Walla. She scored the deciding goal in the 58th minute, tallying in her fourth consecutive game with her fifth of the postseason. She also has three two assists for the playoffs. AJ Crooks, meanwhile, was lightly tested in comparison to counterpart at the other end in her shutout performance. CV is playing the North Puget Sound League - Cascade regular season champion (12-0-2) Kennedy Catholic in the state semifinals.
