INW DI College Recap – Week Four: Big Sky wrapped up non-conference slate; Zags do well

Among the Division I action this week, Eastern Washington and Montana finished their non-conference slate at the Montana Invitational, both posting positive results. Their Big Sky rivals in Idaho, meanwhile, went winless on the road. The Gonzaga women went 2-1-0 on the road with a win at Boise State and a split in a pair of overtime games in Texas while the men's side picked up their first result at home.

Here is a rundown of the area DI schools and their conferences as well as how players from the Inland Northwest performed around the nation in the past week.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE - WOMEN

Monday, September 15

Gonzaga University 2-0 Boise State University
The Bulldogs spoiled the Broncos bid to sweep most of its local rivals, having beaten Idaho and Idaho State last week. After intercepting a pass in the right corner, Karley Baggerly found Tori Lee inside the six for the close-range finish 23 minutes in and Heather Johnson finally got her first of the year when she collected the ball off the crossbar from a Kristin Standish shot off a corner and put the rebound away from about eight yards. Christie Tombari (Spokane Valley, WA) only needed to make two saves to hand the Broncos their first shutout loss of the year, though the shots were fairly even at 15-14 in favor of the Zags.  GU MORE [+] - BSU MORE [+]

Gonzaga University 2-1 (OT) North Texas University
After a few days back at home, the Bulldogs headed much further south and handed NTU their second loss of the year in stunning fashion. Trailing since the 28th minute, it looked like defeat was at hand for the Zags, but Baggerly found Brittany Doan for one of the latest goals in program history, putting her on a breakaway behind the back line. Doan put it past the keeper with just 10 seconds left on the clock. A cross from Lee with just under four minutes left in overtime gave the Zags the victory when Mikayla Anderson (Spokane, WA) nodded a looping flick over the keeper from inside the box in the 107th minute.  MORE [+]

WEST COAST CONFERENCE - MEN

Saturday, September 20

UNLV 2-4 Gonzaga University
The winless Bulldogs finally got a result, ending their scoring woes - one goal in the previous five games - in the process. A standout late last season, Jakub Granlund finally found his form along with Conner Bevans. Granlund gave the Zags a two-goal lead at the break with a well-paced shot from about 22 yards that curled inside the far right post on a ball from Lars Ludwigs in the 14th and a 15 yard shot courtesy of a ball over the defense from Bevans in the 37th. UNLV, however, rallied back in the final five minutes of the initial hour with goals in the 56th, off a free kick, and 59th, a scramble in front of goal. Bevans, though, delivered a ball across the area in the 68th, finding Zach Hamer (Spokane, WA) to restore the lead from 12 yards. He then clinched the win in the final minute when he drove up the field past a defender and put it past the keeper.  MORE [+]
