INW DII & III College Recap – Week Two: Division II schools open preseason play

Among the Division II and III action this week, MSU-Billings saw both the men and women each pick up a positive result in their openers as the Division II programs played their first official games of the year. Meanwhile the Whitworth women split on the road in Texas and the men's teams at Whitman and Whitworth both netted 2-1 wins over visiting Corban.

Here is a rundown of the area schools and their conferences as well as how players from the Inland Northwest performed around the nation in the past week.

GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE - WOMEN

Thursday, September 4

Northwest Nazarene 0-3 Regis University
The Crusaders took the game to the half before succumbing on the road to three second half goals. Akina Fujimoto (Meridian, ID) helped lead the hosts with an assist on the opening goal in the 52nd minute. MORE [+]

Saturday, September 6

Central Washington 0-1 CSU Monterrey Bay  
The Wildcats were edged in their season opener, falling to the Otters on a 19th minute goal.  MORE [+]

MSU-Billings 2-1 Univ of Mary 
In the Yellowjackets opener, Alisa Sagdahl led the team to the victory in the second half with a goal and assist. After a scoreless opening 45, her corner in the 56th found the head of defender Haley McFarlane for the opening tally. After the hosts 65th minute equalizer, Sagdahl netted the winner in the 81st on a ball from defender Jennifer Johnson (Wenatchee, WA).  MORE [+]

Northwest Nazarene 0-0 Colorado Christian 
After being peppered with 22 shots, making six saves, two days prior, freshman goalkeeper Daniele Ortiz made seven saves for the shutout as the two sides dueled to the stalemate.  MORE [+]


GNAC & DIV II NOTES:  Regis' Rikki Fix (Boise, ID) scored the opening goal in the 33rd minute of a 2-1 victory over Eastern New Mexico Sunday.

Thursday, September 4

CSU-Stanislaus 0-2 Northwest Nazarene University 
The Crusaders used a pair of goals in a four-minute span in the first half to win their opening game. Erik Anderson (Boise, ID) got his boot to a bouncing loose ball inside the box for the opening goal in the 24th minute and a long ball from Luke Broz (Boise, ID) in the 28th put Jaime Verdin behind the defense for the second goal. Alfredo Ontiveros made five saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]

Friday, September 5

MSU-Billings 2-2 Upper Iowa University
Sam Butterworth led the Yellowjackets to a two-goal advantage, but his send off opened the door for the hosts to earn the draw in the season opener. The defender found the head of Thorge Jess in the 31st minute and then doubled the lead early in the second half when Rhys Lambert flicked in a free kick from Butterworth in the 47th. The hosts got one back in the 57th before Butterworth, already with one of six cards that had been issued in the physical contest, was sent off in the 63rd. Three minutes later the Peacocks found the equalizer.  MORE [+]

Saturday, September 6

Northwest Nazarene 0-2 CSU Monterey Bay
A Verdin shot off the post in the 41st minute proved costly for the Crusaders as the hosts stung them for a pair of goals in the first four minutes of the second half, scoring in the 47th and 49th.  MORE [+]

Sunday, September 7

Illinois-Springfield 2-1 (OT) MSU-Billings 
The Yellowjackets fell behind via a penalty in the 21st minute, but answered from the spot at the other end in the 32nd minute converted by Jess after Cameron Lee was fouled in the box. The game remained deadlocked until the visitors got the winner in the 102nd.  MORE [+] 

GNAC & DIV II NOTES: Cody Lang (Spokane, WA) needed to only make one save in a 1-0 shutout win for Seattle Pacific Thursday at Humboldt State and then made six stops in a 1-1 draw at Cal State Chico Saturday... A throw-in from Matt Beaulaurier (Spokane, WA) gave Saint Martin's the early lead in the 16th minutes against ninth ranked UC San Diego, who rallied for a 2-1 win.

Friday, September 5

Whitworth University 2-0 Southwestern 
The Pirates finally got their first goal of the season, getting on the board after eight minutes when Tiara Pajimola (Spokane, WA) drove in from the right side and beat the keeper near post. A half-hour later when a through ball from Lindsey Foster put freshman Leah Corra one-on-one with the keeper for the winning strike. Andrea Stump only needed two saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]

Whitworth University 1-2 (OT) Univ of Mary Hardin-Baylor (@ Southwestern)
Pajimola scored the opener again, tallying on a shot from the top of the area four minutes into the second half, but the Texans found an equalizer in the 75th and the win five minutes into overtime.  MORE [+]

Sunday, September 7

Whitman College 2-1 Whittier College (@ UC Santa Cruz) 
Freshman Alissa Soo's debut proved pivotal for the Missionaries. She scored the opening goal of the game in the 35th minute on a ball from Clara Merlino and then helped create the winner in the final minute of play, combining with Kelsey Peck to set up Brianna Brown.  MORE [+]

Thursday, September 4

Corban University 1-2 Whitman College
The Missionaries took the lead 14 minutes into the contest when defender Kyle Flannery scored on the rebounded save of a Riley Paul shot. Kyle Hammond (Missoula, MT / North Idaho College) pulled the visitors even on the last second of the half following a blocked shot. Whitman took the win in the 68th when Bridger Sellegren (Bozeman, MT) found the head of defender Logan Grime.  MORE [+]

Saturday, September 6

Corban University 1-2 (OT) Whitworth University 
The visitors grabbed the lead 12 minutes into the contest, but Whitworth grabbed more control of the game as time wore on, getting the equalizer in the 64th minute when a ball from Mike Ramos (Spokane, WA) on the right flank was finished inside the box by Samual Jarrett. The Pirates got a man advantage with just over six minutes left when Ramos was pulled down outside the box, but nearly saw the visitors score with just a few minutes left. Instead, the Bucs got the win seven minutes into overtime on a nice individual effort from Rylan Berriman from the top of the box.  INWsn REPORT [+]
