INW NAIA & NWAC College Recap – Week Two: NWAC East teams dominate inter-divisional play

Among the NAIA and NWAC action this week, the College of Idaho went unbeaten in two games in Utah and the University of Great Falls men won their conference opener. The NWAC East women's teams put forth an impressive outing, combining for a 8-2-4 record against Tacoma CC and members of the NWAC South Division on the week while the men went 6-2-1.

Here is a rundown of the area schools and their conferences as well as how players from the Inland Northwest performed around the nation in the past week.

Friday, September 5

Arizona Christian University 0-3 Eastern Oregon University (@ Westminster College) 
The two sides were in a stalemate through the first hour-plus before Makensie Forsyth (Prosser, WA) found Kaellana De Vera in the 65th minute for the opener. Sdyney Nelson (Spokane, WA) and Katherine Hood scored over a five minute span on balls from Danika Pink in the 73rd and Kendra Corless (Sandpoint, ID) in the 78th, respectively, to secure the win while Jessica Parker (Boise, ID) completed the shutout with a lone save.  MORE [+]

Saturday, September 6

Arizona Christian University 1-2 College of Idaho (@ Westminster College) 
The Yotes found them selves trailing after 11 minutes, but answered quickly in the second half Jessica Whitehead (Kuna, ID) connected with Jamiece Yizar (Pocatello, ID) for the equalizer in the 48th. Katelyn Benavidez provided the winner in the 59th minute courtesy of Summer Jackson (Boise, ID). Brittany Houghton, serving in goal for the second half, kept the visitors off the board with five saves.  MORE [+]

Eastern Oregon University 0-3 Westminster College 
The hosts dominated from the start, outshooting the Mountaineers 16-1, but only led by one at the break. They added two more in the second half with goalkeeper Abi Yanke (Boise, ID) not needing to make a save on EOU's lone shot for the shutout.  MORE [+]

Trinity Lutheran University 0-3 Univ of Great Falls
Back-to-back goals put the hosts firmly in control as they outshot the shorthanded visitors 37-1 in the first half as they battled a man down the entire game due to injuries in the squad. Chelsea Roughsedge scored in the 22nd and Dani De La Vina doubled it two minutes later on a ball from Ashley Klepec (Moses Lake, WA). Killian Gilreath (Helena, MT) connected with Katie Bennett (Butte, MT) in the 62nd to round out the scoring.  MORE [+]

Rocky Mountain College 4-0 Dakota Wesleyan University
Gabi Heflin scored twice with Jaelene Zygmond and Alex Harvey providing the other two tallies en route to the win.

Sunday, September 7

College of Idaho 1-1 Westminster College 
Roles reversed on Sunday with Benavidez setting up Whitehead for the opening goal at the three-minute mark of the game for the Yotes. Houghton's bid for a shutout was only spoiled by an own goal off the head of a defender in the 69th minute, but was highlighted by a penalty kick save in the 80th and 11 total saves. Yanke only made one save at the other end as the hosts outshot the Yotes 26-3.  MORE [+]

Concordia University (CA) 1-2 Concordia University 
After a 1-1 draw versus 12th ranked Vanguard Friday, the top-ranked Cavaliers avoided another upset against their fifth ranked compatriots from the south. Erin Huisingh (Pasco, WA) put the hosts up after 20 minutes from about 13 yards on a ball from Annika Hayman. In the second half, Ashley Ames (Liberty Lake, WA) put them up two in the 55th minute knocking in the rebound of free kick Ariel Kanable that was saved.  MORE [+]

Rocky Mountain College 2-0 Univ of Jamestown 
The Bears broke through in the second half against the hosts with Harvey (Billings, MT) netting on the hour mark and Heflin (Billings, MT) adding some insurance in the 78th.  MORE [+]

Trinity Lutheran College 0-8 Carroll College 
Cassidy Hammons (Boise, ID) put the Saints up just two minutes into the game with Tessa Neameyer, Kayla Bayer and Sidney Batkoff (Spokane, WA) adding to it for a four-goal lead at the break. Jessica Becker scored two in the second half along with tallies from Cassie Baldwin and Emily Spindler (Helena, MT) as every player on the squad saw time.  MORE [+]

NOTES: Defender Elle' Nelson (Missoula, MT) started and helped lead Warner Pacific to a 1-0 win at Willamette Saturday... Ashlei Morgan (Meridian, ID) helped set up the 1-0 game-winner for Oregon Tech with 15 seconds left at Northwest Christian Thursday.

Saturday, September 6

Univ of Great Falls 2-0 Carroll College - ** Conference Game **
Luis Torres opened the scoring in the first conference game of the year for the Argonauts in the 31st minute of the contest. Jordan Byland (Missoula, MT) found Renan Zampieri in the 54th to double the lead and Jose Pena made four saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]

Rocky Mountain College 0-2 Dakota Wesleyan University (@ Jamestown)
The Jimmies continued their dominant start to the season, scoring twice in the second half for the win.  MORE [+]

NOTES: On Wednesday, Warner Pacific crushed first-year program Multnomah 12-0 with Geovanny Vazquez (Kennewick, WA / Walla Walla CC) tallying two of the first three goals and Mario Guizar (Kennewick, WA / Walla Walla CC) getting the fourth tally... Already up by 10 against Multnomah, Jacob Weaver (Spokane, WA) got on the scoresheet for the Eagles with a tally in the 84th in a 12-0 Northwest University victory... Tanner Williams (Sandpoint, ID) scored for Evergreen State Sunday in a 2-1 home loss to Willamette.

Tuesday, September 2

Tacoma CC 0-8 North Idaho College 
The Lady Cardinals dominated the contest with Haley White (La Grande, OR) setting up the opening goals by Taylor Peterson (Missoula, MT) in the 12th and Meghan Pagano (Sandpoint, ID) in the 14th. Whitney Reichold (Sandpoint, ID) made it three in the 23rd. They continued to cruise in the second half with Pagano scoring two more on either side of goal from White. Natasha Wilkerson (Bonners Ferry, ID) and Katelyn Sly (Clarkston, WA) rounded out the scoring with White earning one more assist as well.  MORE [+]

Wednesday, September 3

Tacoma CC 0-6 CC Spokane 
Sarah Melvin (Spokane, WA) gave the Bigfoot the lone goal of the first half on a ball from Makenzie Welch (Meridian, ID) in the 16th minute. She continued to play well in the second half, doubling the lead in the 53rd and setting up Lindsay DeHaas (Spokane, WA) at the hour mark. Welch then scored one herself in the 67th. Maddie Brown (Greenleaf, ID) connected with Sarah Marro (Spokane, WA) in the 84th before tallying her own four minutes later courtesy of Rashelle Fisher, who also set up Welch's goal earlier. Emily Busselman (Richland, WA) recorded the clean sheet.

Thursday, September 4

Wenatchee Valley College 2-2 Clackamas CC
The two sides finished the first half even at one each with Michaela Roberts (Wenatchee, WA) scoring from about 30 yards for the Knights and the hosts getting even on an own goal. The hosts took the lead in the 64th, but a London Cleverly (Moses Lake, WA) cross found the head of Itzel Castro with four minutes left to earn the draw.

Friday, September 5

North Idaho College 2-0 Clackamas CC 
Alex Rankin (Newman Lake, WA) gave the visitors the lead on a cross from Jaimee Hulst (Helena, MT) in the 16th minute and Natalie Middleton (Liberty Lake, WA) chipped the ball over the defense for Sly with six minutes left to secure the win.  MORE [+]

Walla Walla CC 1-1 Lane CC
The Warriors jumped in front on a goal from Kylie Gorton (Moscow, ID) in the 29th minute of the contest, but the hosts found the equalizer in the second half. Sasha Holt (Boise, ID) was pivotal with 11 saves for the visitors.

Treasure Valley CC 2-0 Southwest Oregon CC 
Tessa Pitzer (Eagle, ID) made nine saves for the Chukars with Alex Rivera (Boise, ID) scoring their first half tally 12 minutes in via Sierra Martinez (Boise, ID). Audrey Dias (Middleton, ID) netted in the second half.

Yakima Valley CC 2-1 Clark College
After falling behind in the 11th, the Yaks rebounded with Salome Yates (Yakima, WA) scoring in the 19th courtesy of Samantha Herzog (Yakima, WA) and providing the assist on the Haylee Ashby winner four minutes from time.

Columbia Basin College 0-2 Pierce College 
The Hawks went into the break in a stalemate, but saw the hosts prevail with a pair of second half goals.

Saturday, September 6 

North Idaho College 2-2 Pierce College 
After allowing their first goal of the season in the ninth minute, the Cardinals rebounded with the equalizer from Sly when White drove toward the end line before cutting it back to her in the 32nd. White beat a defender and then found Pagano in the 76th for the lead and it looked like they would get the win at Pierce only to see the hosts tally in the 90th minute.  MORE [+]

CC Spokane 4-0 Southwest Oregon CC
Lexi Miller (Pasco, WA) and Brown each had a goal and assist with Miller opening the scoring 12 minutes in via Serena Robertson (Richland, WA). Brown set up Melvin three minutes into the second half before pushing the lead to three on a ball from Miller in the 68th. Fisher capped the scoring two minutes from time. Emily Busselman made four saves for the shutout.

Wenatchee Valley College 1-0 Chemeketa CC
A free kick from Roberts proved to be the difference in the game, though Shawnee Covington's (Omak, WA) 12 saves in goal kept the hosts off the board.

Treasure Valley CC 2-1 Lane CC
Rivera opened the scoring again, tallying in the 32nd via Alayna Campbell (Meridian, ID). Kassie Barnes (Meridian, ID) found Brooke Thomas (McCall, ID) in the 64th for what proved to be the game-winner.

Yakima Valley CC 1-4 Chemeketa CC
The Yaks were down by two at the break, but pulled back within one via Yates in the 57th on a ball from Aniss Araiza (Yakima, WA). The hosts, though, added two more to cement the victory.

Tuesday, September 2

Tacoma CC 0-4 North Idaho College 
Adam Talley (Newman Lake, WA) and Brady Ulen (Post Falls, ID) each scored a pair of goals as the Cardinals rolled to the win. Talley provided the lone first half goal with David Geske (Twin Falls, ID) and Matt Howard (Post Falls, ID) setting Ulen's two second half strikes before Talley capped the scoring via Elias Herman (Bozeman, MT). Robert Powles (Spokane, WA) made four saves for the shutout. MORE [+]

Wednesday, September 3

Tacoma CC 1-0 CC Spokane 
The Bigfoot and Titans were deadlocked until the visitors broke through with a goal in the 77th minute.

Friday, September 5

Columbia Basin College 1-1 Pierce College
The Hawks jumped in front a minute into the second half of the contest on a goal from Jesus Morales and thought Lupe Arceo's (Royal City, WA) seven saves were going to get them the win only to see the hosts pull even two minutes from time.

Walla Walla CC 5-1 South Puget Sound CC
The Warriors dominated early with Vincente Flores (Touchet, WA) scoring the first three goals consecutively in the second, fifth and 27th minutes. The Clippers scored first in the second half, spoiling Fernando Gutierrez's (Pasco, WA) shutout bid - four saves - before Christian Segovia (Walla Walla, WA) tallied a pair in the final 10 minutes for the visitors.

Wenatchee Valley College 5-3 Chemeketa CC
The Knights jumped into a five-goal lead before the hosts were able to answer back with three. Josh Alvarez (Leavenworth, WA) provided four of the goals, scoring in the sixth, 20, 54th and 62nd minutes. Joel Villa tallied the third goal. Five different players provided the assists in the victory.

Treasure Valley CC 2-0 Southwest Oregon CC
Mursal Dahiri (Boise, ID) scored the opening goal in the 25th minute on a ball from Sidronio Rangel (Fruitland, ID). Jesus Pelayo (St Maries, ID) provided the second in the 70th and Sergio Gonzalez (Fruitland, ID) made four saves for the shutout.

Saturday, September 6

North Idaho College 4-0 Pierce College
Four seems to be the special number as the Cardinals posted their third consecutive victory by the same scoreline. Talley provided the first and final goals yet again as well, scoring the opening in the 48th and the final goal with four minutes left on assists from Sean Cotton and Hamidou Kante, respectively. Alec Johnson doubled the lead via Braden Ridgewell in the 58th and Howard notched the third courtesy of Geske. Mitchell Markovetz earned the clean sheet with six saves.

CC Spokane 2-1 Southwest Oregon CC 
The Bigfoot returned to the win column courtesy of Alex Opland (Rathdrum, ID). He put the hosts up after a minute and added what proved to be the winner four minutes after the break on a ball from Jonathan Cruz. Damian Ruiz's (Richland, WA) bid for a shutout with eight saves was spoiled in the 85th.

Walla Walla CC 0-1 Clark College
The Warriors gave up a goal six minutes in and were never able to find the equalizer.
