INW NAIA & NWAC College Recap – Week Five: Turnaround season for Wenatchee Valley men continues

Amidst the NAIA action this week, the Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho women played to a stalemate in their Cascade Collegiate Conference opener while the Yote men split, falling at home in an 11-goal thriller to CCC leading Concordia before winning at Oregon Tech.

Their Frontier Conference counterparts featured a pair of conference showdown on the women's side with Great Falls losing at Westminster while Carroll and Rocky Mountain battled to a scoreless draw. In the lone conference match-up on the men's side, Great Falls won their eighth consecutive a victory against Carroll, both of whom also defeated non-league Trinity Lutheran over the weekend.

In the NWAC East, Spokane, Treasure Valley and North Idaho maintained their status as the top three, going unbeaten on the week. On the men's side Walla Walla, Wenatchee Valley and North Idaho were the top performers on the week with the Warriors topping visiting Spokane and the other two picking up wins away from home.

Here is a rundown of the area schools and their conferences as well as how players from the Inland Northwest performed around the nation in the past week.

CASCADE COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE - MEN

Tuesday, September 23

Concordia University 7-4 College of Idaho
In a wild goal-fest the two went back-and-forth much of the contest. Luis Gomez (Idaho Falls, ID) and Joseph Bolin (Payette, ID) combined to set up Nate Hunt (Meridian, ID) 12 minutes in for the opening goal, but the Cavaliers scored in the 22nd and 24th to take the lead. Hunt tied it up in the 33rd for the Yotes only to see Concordia rattle off four consecutive with two on each side of the break, going up 6-2 in the 64th. Tyler Lawton (Boise, ID / Walla Walla CC) converted a penalty less than 30 seconds later and then combined with Jake Helm (Boise, ID) to set up Bolin in the 72nd to pull within two, but Ben Culpan scored his third for the visitors a minute later to put it out of reach.  MORE [+]

Corban University 3-0 Evergreen State College
Eliseo Santana (Idaho Falls, ID) scored the opening goal on a free kick 10 minutes into the match and set up the final goal in the 68th minute.

Warner Pacific University 4-1 Oregon Tech
After falling behind 75 seconds into the contest Mario Guizar (Kennewick, WA / Walla Walla CC) scored two to put the Knights in front, scoring from 15 yards on a cross at the 10-minute mark and after a 50-minute stalemate drove in for the second in the 63rd. Geovanny Vazquez (Kennewick, WA / Walla Walla CC) put it out of reach five minutes later.

Saturday, September 27

College of Idaho 3-0 Oregon Tech 
Gomez scored the opener in the 24th on a cross from Hunt and John Fronk (McCall, ID) put Bolin through on a run to goal seven minutes later to double the advantage. Riley Smith rounded out the scoring with a 20-yard strike in the 82nd and Grant Billings (Boise, ID) made six saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]

Northwest University 1-2 Concordia University 
Jacob Weaver (Spokane, WA) scored in the 87th for the Eagles in hopes of a rally, spoiling the shutout.

Evergreen State College 1-1 Warner Pacific College
Tanner Williams (Sandpoint, ID) put Connor Beck (Red Lodge, WA) on a breakaway for the opening goal in the 42nd, but the hosts earned the draw when their keeper came forward and converted a penalty in the 87th.

Northwest Christian University 0-5 Corban University
Santana put the Warriors on the board 21 minutes into the match and scored the first in the second half to push the lead to four. Derik Chaney (Helena, MT) set up the final goal int he 62nd.

Northwest Christian University 0-4 Concordia University
Mackenna Morton (Yakima, WA) helped set up the second goal in the 24th minute and Erin Huisingh (Pasco, WA) delivered a cross for the third in the 68th.

Northwest University 3-0 Oregon Tech 
Rachel Saleen (Boise, ID) beat a defender in the 28th to score the opener for the Eagles. Patty Hughes (Kalispell, MT) made three saves for the clean sheet.

Evergreen State College 1-4 Southern Oregon 
Kendra Madares-Kelly (Boise, ID) scored from outside the box 10 minutes into the contest for the Raiders win.

Corban University 0-1 Warner Pacific College

Friday, September 26

Eastern Oregon University 1-1 College of Idaho
The visiting Mountaineers got on the board first when a cross from Alora Brown (La Grande, OR) found Kaeliana Devera at the top of the six, where she turned and knocked it home in the 42nd minute. The Yotes answered in the 58th when Summer Jackson (Boise, ID) headed in a free kick sent from the corner by Hailey Woods (Meridian, ID).  CI MORE [+] - EOU MORE [+]

Northwest University 1-0 Southern Oregon University
Hughes made another six saves for a shutout, which proved critical in the one-goal decision.

Corban University 0-1 Concordia University
Erin Huisingh (Pasco, WA) delivered a corner in the 71st minute that was headed in for the deciding goal.

Northwest Christian University 0-1 Warner Pacific College
Defender Elle' Nelson (Missoula, MT) helped lead the Knights, picked to finish ninth in the conference, to their second 1-0 shutout victory of the week.

Evergreen State College 2-0 Oregon Tech

After suffering their first defeat at the hands of 14th ranked SAU Monday, the 16th ranked Griffins bounced back in impressive fashion. In addition to making two saves before her 64th minute exit, Abi Yanke (Boise, ID) set up the second goal in the 11th minute off her punt. Emily Bergland (Boise, ID) set up the final tally in the 66th.

Yanke made a pair of saves as the Griffins dominated the contest with an 18-4 advantage in shots.  MORE [+]

Jamie Carter made five saves for the Saints on the road while the hosts were led by while at the other end the Bears allowed just four shots.

Trinity Lutheran College 1-5 Rocky Mountain College (NL)
Jack Clancy scored four goals for the Bears and Zach Wall (Billings, MT) netted the other. Ben Teasedale created two of the goals with Colin Gregory (Billings, MT) and Ricky Friend each also tallying an assist.

Carroll College 3-5 Univ of Great Falls 
The visitors got on the board first when Nathan Boone (Whitefish, MT) found  Dylan Vazquez in the fifth minute. Torres evened things up in the 13th on a ball from Jon-Eric Krans and Bisbo put the Argos in front seven minutes later. Arturo Valle tied things back up for the Saints in the 27th, but the Argos reclaimed the lead before the break when Valderrama connected with Jordan Byland (Missoula, MT). Carroll made things level once more through Stanley Underwood (Missoula, MT) in the 68th, but the hosts answered right back through a Danny Delgadillo penalty kick three minutes later. Trinity Lutheran College 2-3 Carroll College (NL) 
Isaac Bostrom (Helena, MT) netted the opening goal less than two minutes into the contest via Vazquez with Valle doubling the advantage emphatically with a bicycle kick strike from close range six minutes later. Vazquez added a header on a Boone free kick in the 65th that proved key as the visitors rallied with two in the final 13 minutes of play.  MORE [+]

The rivals started off with a first half stalemate and exchanged goals in the second half for the draw. Oryian Matheny (Grandview, WA) connected with Annika Enloe (Leavenworth, WA) in the 54th to give the hosts the advantage, but former Warrior Serena Robertson (Richland, WA) provided the reply 14 minutes later.

Yakima Valley CC 0-2 North Idaho College
Jaimee Hulst put the Cardinals on the board three minutes before the break and Elly Priddy doubled the advantage in the 63rd. Madi Williams (five saves) and Cassy Van Der Mey (four saves) split the shutout.  MORE [+]

Wenatchee Valley College 0-4 Treasure Valley CC
The Chukars picked up the easy win with a pair of goals in each half. Kassie Barnes (Meridian, ID) set up the opening two goals, finding Brooke Thomas (McCall, ID) six minutes in and Alex Rivera (Boise, ID) at the half-hour mark. Alexandra Jahns (Twin Falls, ID) made it three in the 74th and Rivera scored a second courtesy of Thomas in the 89th. Danielle Jorgensen (Pocatello, ID) made six saves for the shutout.

Saturday, September 27

Wenatchee Valley College 0-8 CC Spokane 
Rashelle Fisher and Sarah Melvin (Spokane, WA) set the tone early with Fisher finishing the game with a goal and three assists. Melvin tallied a hat-trick, two coming in the first half. Fisher opened the scoring less than two minutes in and set up Melvin for the second int eh 28th. Maddie Brown (Greenleaf, ID) added the third a minute later before Fisher connected with Melvin again. Sydni Thomas (Greenacres, WA) found Brittany Bruegeman (Spokane, WA) on a corner in the 48th and the Fisher to Melvin combo struck again in the 65th. Robertson set up the final two goals by Mackenzie Welch (Meridian, ID) and Halie Gronenthal (Spokane, WA) in the final 10 minutes.  INWsn REPORT [+]

Stuck in a deadlock, the Yaks broke through in the 73rd when Salome Yates (Yakima, WA) connected with Emma Avalos (Yakima, WA). Vidriana Moreno (Yakima, WA) made 10 saves in the shutout.

North Idaho College 0-0 Columbia Basin College 
Stephanie Gibson (Yakima, WA) made 10 stops for the Hawks in the stalemate and Van Der Mey made six at the other end for the visiting Cardinals.  MORE [+]

Diego Diaz Sanchez put the Chukars on the board in the 26th minute via Christian Anaya (Middleton, ID) and Jesus Pelayo (Blackfoot, ID) doubled the lead in the 52nd. Diaz Sanchez added a second on a ball from Herve Mashindora (Boise, ID) seven minutes from time. Ibrahim Ibrahim (Meridian, ID) made four stops for the clean sheet.

Wednesday, September 24

CC Spokane 2-3 Walla Walla CC
The hosts jumped out in front with two goals in the first seven minutes. Vincente Flores (Touchet, WA) found Christian Vega (Walla Walla, WA) two minutes in and Christian Segovia (Walla Walla, WA) tallied via Jose Vasquez (Kennewick, WA) to give the hosts the commanding advantage. The Bigfoot, though, rallied in the second half with Devin Leon scoring in the 62nd and Jonathan Cruz in the 69th. The jubilation was short-lived, however, with the Flores finding Francisco Sanchez (Walla Walla, WA) a minute later to reclaim the lead.

Wenatchee Valley College 3-1 Treasure Valley CC 
The Chukars took the initial lead six minutes in via Mursal Dahiri (Boise, ID), but the visitors pulled even in the 26th when Yonatan Rodriguez (East Wenatchee, WA) found Josh Alvarez (Leavenworth, WA). Mauricio Perez (East Wenatchee, WA) gave the Knights the lead in the sixth minute of the second half on a ball from Hernan Mendoza (East Wenatchee, WA) and Alvarez clinched the result with some insurance four minutes from time via Pablo Gonzalez (Yakima, WA).

Saturday, September 27

North Idaho College 3-0 Columbia Basin College 
Adam Talley (Newman Lake, WA) had a hand in all three goals, setting up the initial strike from Braden Ridgewell (Coeur d'Alene, ID) at the quarter-hour mark and then scoring the next two, doubling the lead in the 39th and capping the game in the 82nd on a ball from Hamidou Kante. Splitting the shutout were Mitchell Markovitz (Boise, ID) with five saves and Robert Powles (Spokane, WA) with two.  MORE [+]

Wenatchee Valley College 4-2 CC Spokane 
Joel Villa (East Wenatchee, WA) put the visitors on the board 15 minutes in and Alvarez capped a nice play with a perfect header off a cross from Jose Casillas (Wenatchee, WA) in the 20th. The Bigfoot charged back with Alex Opland (Rathdrum, ID) scoring in the 32nd via Mario Zarate (Richland, WA) and just 25 seconds into the second half on a ball from Crisantos Chavez (Mabton, WA). Alvarez, though, scored on the second chance after a Casillas free kick struck the wall, and Mauricio Perez (East Wenatchee, WA) capped the game in stoppage time on a ball from Edgar Leon (East Wenatchee, WA).  INWsn REPORT [+]
