INW DII-III College Recap – Week Five: MSU-Billings sides upset contenders; Whitworth, Whitman go 6-1-1 on the road

Among the Division II action this week, the MSU-Billings men and women made statements. Picked to finish fifth in the GNAC, the Yellowjacket men went on the road and played to a 3-3 tie against the top choice Simon Fraser and topped third-choice Western Washington. Also picked fifth, the ladies swept at home, edging third-choice Central Washington 1-0 and second-pick Seattle Pacific 2-1.

The final seconds proved game-breaking for Northwest Nazarene Saturday. The women fell with just one second on the clock in overtime versus visiting Central Washington and the men prevailed with seven seconds left in extra time at Simon Fraser.

In the Division III Northwest Conference, the Whitworth got out their scoring slump - one goal in each of first two games at home - by putting 11 on the board away from home over the weekend. Meanwhile, the Whitman men and women went a combined 3-0-1 in weekend on the road.

Here is a rundown of the area schools and their conferences as well as how players from the Inland Northwest performed around the nation in the past week.

GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE - MEN

Thursday, September 25

MSU-Billings 3-3 Simon Fraser University
The winless Yellowjackets rallied twice to earn a tie against the conference powerhouse, going to overtime for a fifth time in six games. The hosts used a penalty 28 seconds in to take the lead, but MSUB matched it with Thorge Jess converting from the spot in the 13th. The Clan then put two on the board before the break to take what appeared to be a commanding advantage. The Yellowjackets didn't give up, though, and took advantage of an SFU red card with Jess combining with Strom Nuernberger (Billings, MT) in the 68th to set up Colin Ralston, who put things level five minutes later via Ryhs Lambert.  The final 90 seconds of overtime proved costly as both Jess and Nuernberger were sent off.  MORE [+]

The Yellowjackets capped the road trip with another surprise result, snaring the victory on a 70 yard free kick from Tom Lohmann that took a big bounce before Rhys Lambert nodded it past the keeper for the game-winner in the 70th minute. Lohmann needed just one save for the shutout despite being outshot 12-8.  MORE [+]

Kayla Williams delivered a long free kick that the Wildcats failed to clear, allowing Ashley Cook-Cox (Spokane, WA) to score in the 10th. Laura Seymour (Spokane Valley, WA) and Lexi Fesenbek combined in the 29th to set up Nsa to double the lead. It would not be enough, though, as the Wildcats charged back through Hadli Farrand (Ellensburg, WA). They clawed back into the mix in the 39th when Farrand found Lauren Duty for a one-on-one break with the keeper, making the deficit one at the break. Farrand then scored twice for the win. She beat the keeper one-on-one in the 80th minute off a cross from Mackenzie Nolte to send the game to overtime where she knocked home a loose ball after a Whitney Lowe free kick with just one second remaining on the clock.  CWU MORE [+] - NNU MORE [+]

NORTHWEST CONFERENCE - MEN

Mike Ramos (Spokane, WA). In one of the most dominant performances in years, the striker scored three times and set up the other four as Whitworth rolled to the win. The performance, which tied three program records, began in the 14th minute with his first goal. Just 22 seconds later he delivered a cross that Karl Muelheims (Spokane, WA) finished for the second, and in the 28th he pushed the halftime lead to three on a penalty. Eleven minutes into the second half he fed Rylan Berriman to make the difference four. The Bruins spoiled the potential shutout in the 75th, sparking three more goals from the Pirates. Ramos found Kyle Morris in the 79th, beat the keeper one-on-one for the first Bucs hat-trick since 2005 in the 83rd and set up Sam Engle in the 89th.  MORE [+]
