Division I Weekend Recap: INW schools and their conferences

The Eastern Washington women may have found the greatest success for teams around the region this week as the Division I schools continue their non-conference portions of the season. Perhaps, however, it was an even bigger week for players hailing from Boise as many of the Idaho natives played key roles in their matches. Here is a look around at the various Inland Northwest schools in top flight and their respective conferences for the past week.

West Coast Conference - Men

The Gonzaga men kicked off the first of three consecutive games in eastern Oregon, falling to Oregon State, 3-0, Saturday. Emery Welshman gave the hosts the lead in the 37th minute with a pair of second half goals from Brenden Anderson and Glenn Paden ensuring the victory.

Around the rest of the conference it was mixed results as Saint Mary's and Santa Clara were the only winners. Saint Mary's picked up a pair of wins in Wilmington, NC, shutting out UNC-Wilmington 1-0 and Appalachian State 1-0. Santa Clara downed Stanford 2-1.

Meanwhile, San Diego fell 3-0 to UC Santa Barbara, Loyola Marymount dropped a 1-0 decision to UCLA and San Francisco played to a scoreless draw against Cal.

West Coast Conference – Women

The losing streak for the Gonzaga women hit four with their trip to Oregon. The Zags fell to 21st-ranked Oregon State Friday, 2-0, with the Beavers scoring once in each half. On Sunday, Gonzaga took the lead twice in the first half against the University of Oregon. Morgan Manchester (Spokane Valley, WA) and Heather Johnson (Kennewick, WA) set up Lauren Luke's opening goal 44 seconds into the match off a Manchester throw-in. Kristen Parr (Bend, OR) put in an equalizer for the Ducks off a rebounded corner in the 17th minute, but the Zags scored three minutes later through Sila Tuiofea. Oregon equalized again before the break and a pair of second half goals pushed the Ducks to the win.

It was a busy weekend around the conference. Sofia Huerta (Boise, ID) helped lead Santa Clara to an unbeaten weekend at home, scoring twice in a 4-2 victory against UNC-Greensboro Friday and leading the team with seven shots in a 1-1 draw against 15th-ranked San Diego State Sunday. Saint Mary's posted a pair of shutouts with a 1-0 victory against UC-Davis and a 2-0 win versus Bucknell. Pepperdine blanked UC-Irvine 4-0 before falling by the same score to UCLA.

Outside of California, BYU picked up a pair of home wins, downing Cal Poly 5-1 Thursday and the University of Washington 3-1 Saturday. Loyola Marymount went without a goal in Arizona, falling 3-0 to Arizona State but rebounding to muster a scoreless draw against Arizona Sunday.

Big Sky Conference – Women

Eastern Washington University is showing some power heading into conference play with some impressive wins. In addition to posting a 2-0 victory over Idaho Friday in which Cassie Black had a goal and an assist, the Eagles edged the University of Hawaii Sunday. Danielle Jones opened the scoring in the 38th minute and Black netted her third of the weekend five minutes into the second half for the 2-1 win. Jamie Walker was seven minutes away from a shutout when Christy Watanabe spoiled the clean sheet for Hawaii.

In their lone game of the weekend, the Montana Grizzlies played to a scoreless draw against visiting New Mexico State with Kristen Hoon getting the shutout. Idaho State, meanwhile, picked up a 2-1 win at Utah Valley Thursday with Anna Pingree (Boise, ID) giving the Bengals the lead 11 minutes into the second half but were forced into playing extra time when UVU struck in the 88th. Amanda Ellsworth set up both goals in the game, finding Rachel Strawn for her seventh goal of the season in the seventh minute of overtime.

Playing in Boise, Portland State split the weekend with a 2-0 loss to Utah and a 2-1 victory against Nebraska-Omaha. Northern Arizona went unbeaten at home with a 1-1 draw against Florida Gulf Coast and a 1-0 win against San Jose State. Sacramento State split at home with a 4-0 victory Friday against UC-Santa Cruz and a 3-2 loss to Penn Sunday. PAC-12 Conference – Women

The Washington State women picked up two wins on the week, making easy work of visiting Hawaii and border rival Idaho. Micaela Castain headed in a cross from Beau Bremer in the 62nd minute for her seventh goal of the year and with 10 minutes left Korynn Blanksma (Wenatchee, WA) slipped a ball by a defender to Jocelyn Jeffers for a 20-yard strike in a 2-0 win against the islanders Friday. Jeffers only needed 23 seconds to find the back of the net for the lead across the border in Moscow. Idaho evened terms in the 19th when a pass from Lauren Layton (Spokane, WA) was flicked on by Meli Cortez to Katie Baran (Spokane, WA) for the equalizer. From there it was all WSU, though. Delaney Zalud (Colbert, WA) set up Castain’s eighth of the year in the 27th for the lead at the break. Brandi Vega would score her fourth of the year six minutes into the second half and after an own goal pushed the lead to three in the 77th, Jeffers added her third of the weekend in the 83rd.

Nationally-ranked state rival Washington, however, stumbled mightily on the road. They played to a 1-1 draw at Utah State Thursday and fell, 3-1, to BYU Saturday.

Kristen Parr (Bend, OR) helped lead the Oregon Ducks to a pair of wins, scoring the opening goal five minutes into a 2-1 victory against Seattle University Friday and the first of two equalizers in a 4-2 comeback win against Gonzaga Sunday. Their state rivals Oregon State blanked Gonzaga 2-0 Friday and Seattle 1-0 in overtime Sunday.

Arizona State posted a pair of 3-0 shutouts against visiting Loyola Marymount and Florida International, whom Miah Mollay scored the opening goal against in the 41st minute. Arizona, meanwhile, defeated FIU Friday 2-0 and finished in a scoreless deadlock with LMU Sunday. Utah was unbeaten at the Boise State Tournament, downing Portland State 2-0 and playing to a 1-1 draw against the hosts.

Maddy McDevitt made three saves for the shutout with a pair of second half goals leading them to the win. Lauren Hickock (Bozeman, MT) received the ball from Rebe Wolverton and put the opening strike past the onrushing keeper from 12 yards three minutes into the second period. Seven minutes later Shannon Schueren scored her fifth of the year by putting away the rebound of her owned saved penalty for the second time in two weeks after Gabby Garcia had been taken down in the box. On Sunday Hickock reversed roles with Wolverton, providing a through ball for the equalizer eight minutes into the second half after falling behind to Utah in the first half, settling for a 1-1 draw.
