INW player highlights around the nation; Frontier results

The following is a recap, mostly highlights, of how players from around the Inland Northwest  did this weekend around the nation outside the region along with recaps for Montana schools MSU-Billings, Rocky Mountain College and the University of Great Falls.

The Corban University women (Salem, OR) came from behind in a 4-2 victory against cross-town rival Willamette Friday after giving up an own goal 13 minutes in. Tera McDonough (Boise, ID) scored the team's second of the game two minutes into the second half on a 32 yard free kick.

-

Seattle University posted a 1-0 victory at Portland State Sunday with Julia Moravec (Spokane, WA) and Carlee Norquist (Boise, ID) among those leading the defense in the shutout. - MORE

-

Defender Courtney Irwin (Meridian, ID) was the lone field player to go the full contest for New Mexico State in a 1-0 victory against Southern Utah.

-

Though he was outshot 13-1, Northwest University goalkeeper Joe Galbraith (Whitefish, MT) held on as the Eagles were able to muster a 1-1 draw against Menlo College Sunday.

It was the same result for the NU women, who saw a win snatched away from them with three minutes remaining by Rocky Mountain College's Jaelene Zygmond (Billings, MT), who tallied from eight yards out.

-

Southern Oregon rallied to a 2-1 overtime victory against Fresno Pacific with Julie Zamzow (Boise, ID) stealing the ball in the 67th minute and feeding Stephanie Carr in a two-on-one break to get the equalizer. Carr would go onto score the winner on a 30-yard free kick in the 97th.

The Westminster Griffins men earned a 3-0 victory against visiting Doane (Nebraska) Saturday. Wilson Larson (Boise, ID) would put the match out of reach in the second half with a goal and an assist, finding Ryan Smith on a long throw two minutes in and slipping a shot under the keeper in the 55th to cap the scoring.

Another Delgadillo tally

The lady Griffins, meanwhile, rolled to a 3-1 win over Doane with Rylei North scoring all three goals, two unassisted, with Justine Jones (Boise, ID) assisting on the second.

Doane's women rebounded for a 6-0 victory Sunday in Salt Lake City against the University of Great Falls.

The UGF Argos' 21st-ranked men's team were unable to find a victory for the first time this season, giving up a late goal for a 2-2 draw against Doane Sunday. Andy Sandoval gave the Argos the lead less than a minute into the second half and Danny Delgadillo scored yet again seven minutes later for his sixth of the year. The two-goal lead though was not enough as Jake Miller ended Doane's 262-minute scoreless streak to open the season by scoring off a free kick with eight minutes left. Jake Stephens then tied the match up with three minutes left for what stood as a draw. - MORE

Also in Montana, the MSU-Billings Yellowjackets swept their MSUB Cup with a 3-0 victory over Northern State University Saturday after previously upsetting No. 5 Colorado School of Mines Friday. Jennifer Larsen scored on both sides of the break, connecting on a header in the 41st and beat the keeper to the back left corner in the 48th. Alisa Sagdahl, who set up the opener, capped the game in the 77th. Jaucelyn Richter (Billings, MT) and Jennifer Johnson (Wenatchee, WA) had the other two assists. - MORE

Meanwhile, the men's side also picked up a pair of wins in Hawaii to open the season. They downed Chaminade, 2-1, Thursday to open the campaign. Clifton Thomas (Boise, ID) connected with Legofi Crawford for the opening strike in the 44th minute with Matt Brink (Billings, MT) leading the defense in the shutout. Less than a minute after the Silverswords equalized, the Yellowjackets found the winner on a 25-yard strike from Thomas Sheets. - MORE

They continued the trip with a 3-2 win at Hawaii Pacific Sunday. Thomas Chameraud put away the rebound on his own saved penalty kick in the 29th for the lead, but the hosts evened things up before the break. Chameraud, though, pushed the Yellowjackets to the lead by setting up a pair of back-to-back Crawford strikes in the 61st and 63rd. - MORE

They complete the trip against UH-Hilo Tuesday.

The 24th-ranked Memphis Tigers had no problem with Arkansas State Friday in a 4-0 victory, allowing defender Averi Hallman (Spokane, WA / Spokane Shine) to relax and only play 45 minutes. On Sunday, however, the Tigers survived a storm that delayed kickoff two-and-a-half hours only to fall, 3-2, to third-ranked Oklahoma State. After a scoreless first half Memphis took the initial lead two minutes into the second half only to see the Cowgirls fire right back three minutes later and take the lead in the 67th. A penalty put things back to even in the 80th, but Hallman, who played the full match, and the Tigers were unable to keep the lead with OSU scoring with five minutes left.

-

Allison Jordan (Spokane, WA / Spokane Shine) played the full match and Alyssa Saucedo (Spokane Shine) all but five minutes in New Mexico Highlands' 2-1 overtime loss at Angelo State Saturday. Jordan also played the full 90 in Thursday's 2-0 loss at St Edwards University while Saucedo saw 31 minutes after getting the start.

-

Another Shine alum, Morgan Roesler, played every minute in the South Carolina State's Sleep Inn Bulldog Classic. The defender nearly led the team to a scoreless draw Friday only to see Maine get a goal in the 105th minute of play for a 1-0 overtime decision. The Bulldogs rebounded nicely, though, with a 4-0 win against Alabama State Sunday in which she played the full 90.
