INW Collegiate Sunday Night Recap: Spokane-area schools finish weekend in fine fashion

An eventful weekend wrapped up Sunday with Whitworth posting a pair of shutout victories, Eastern Washington rallying to topple Idaho State and Boise State getting its first road victory of the season. The Gonzaga men completed their weekend in Corvallis with a thrilling overtime contest that featured a memorable finish that those in attendance will likely never forget.

WOMEN
Washington State 0 :: 3 Santa Clara
After a scoreless draw Thursday at second-ranked UCLA, the continuation of the visit to California fell apart in the final 45 minutes as Santa Clara put three goals past the Cougars. Sarah Jackson got the first of two assists, setting up Julie Johnston in the 55th. Katie Speidel doubled the advantage in the 76th and Paige Robertson put the match out of reach in the 89th. – MORE

In a showdown of two teams coming off close-fought, but disappointing results in their Big Sky Conference openers Friday, Eastern Washington University bounced back well in the game and on the weekend with a come-from-behind victory against visiting Idaho State University. A goal and assist from Cassie Black cancelled out a Bengal lead on a strike from Amanda Ellsworth less than a minute in. – MORE

A Mary Makris (Emigrant, MT) corner in the 17th minute found the head of Lauren Costa (Missoula, MT) for the deciding tally as Montana outshot Weber State on the day 18-9. Kristen Hoon posted four saves for the clean sheet. – MORE

Wisconsin-Green Bay 2 :: OT :: 3 Gonzaga
After a scoreless first half, things changed completely after the intermission. Nate Pacheco gave the Bulldogs the lead in the 62nd minute and Casey Ames (Spokane, WA) doubled the lead in the 78th. But just as it seemed the Zags were going to post a sweep at Oregon State’s Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic event in Corvallis, Wisconsin-Green Bay through a wrench into the story, scoring two goals in the span of 16 seconds with Sam Krenzien getting the first in the 81st and Ahmad Bah adding the second to force overtime. Gonzaga, though, provided some of its own late flair with Nikolai Littleton, who set up the opening goal connecting with Andrew Owenson with one second remaining in overtime on a shot from 20 yards out. – MORE

Despite her Vandals being outshot 20-7 and having to face 16 corners, goalkeeper Liz Boyden (Spokane, WA) did well with six saves on the day as the only effort that would make its way by her was a fluke own goal off a corner in which a clearance attempt deflected off the keeper and into the back of the net in the 75th minute. – MORE

The hosts got things going quickly with a Stephanie Verdoia strike four minutes in but the visitors answered back in the 16th. Seattle scored twice more for a two-goal lead before the break, the second set up by Carlee Norquist (Boise, ID), and rolled to the win.

A long 35-yard free kick from Kelsey Nicassio into the box created a scramble for the ball which would find its way to Katy Oehring for the deciding goal on a toe poke in the 54th minute. Maddy McDevitt made four saves as the Broncos were outshot 15-9 in their first road victory of the season. – MORE

The hosts rallied for the win with a little help after Western Oregon took the lead after 12 minutes. An own goal tied things up in the 34th and with overtime looming, Dani Eldridge (Spokane, WA) nodded down a Sasha Dini cross to Clarissa Strayer for the winner with less than a minute remaining.

MEN
Whitworth 2 :: 0 Pacific University
A pair of second half goals from Sam Engle propelled the Whitworth men to a 2-0 victory at Pacific. Will Wren set up the first with a cross into the six from the left side in the 71st minute and Andrew Flint the second found him inside the six again with under four minutes remaining. Kyle Novak only needed to make one save as the Pirates outshot the hosts 19-6. – MORE

The host Bruins took the initial lead 19 minutes in via Luke Hammer, but the Missionaries proved too much as they rallied to the win. Sean Williams provided the equalizer in the 26th minute and Andrew Clark (Pasco, WA) tallied the game-winner in the 32nd minute. Jose Beleche added some insurance in the 73rd minute. – MORE

Mackenzie Grow (Spokane, WA) scores unassisted in the 35th minute and Jackie Day heads in a ball from Aaren Sherpe in the 58th with Andrea Stump getting the shutout with three saves. – MORE

After a scoreless first half, the host Bruins took the lead three minutes into the second half through Michelle Young. The Missionaries, however, answered through Marisa Poorboy (Hayden, ID) in the 67th minute on a Taylor Thomas corner kick and found the game-winner 32 seconds into overtime on an 18-yard strike from Clara Merlino. – MORE

Taylor Collinsworth (Bend, OR) needed to make only one save as Linfield outshot Pacific Lutheran 25-6 in the game with Emma Vukic and Emily Fellows each tallying a goal and assist.

WOMEN

It took a while, but once the Coyotes took a bit the feast was on. Brittney Lacey (Boise, ID) set up McKenzie Anderson (Meridian, ID) in the 44th minute and then scored twice herself in the first seven minutes of the second half. She flicked a Sarah Hicks (Boise, ID) cross to double the lead in the 49th and made a fantastic play for her second, bringing the ball out of the air and firing off the bounce into the upper corner from 20 yards in the 52nd minute. Hicks added another assist, finding Brianna Blair (Nampa, ID) in the 69th with a through ball. Eastern Oregon would spoil the shutout with seven minutes remaining with Claire Posadas connecting with Kelli Jones (Boardman, OR). – MORE

MEN
South Dakota SMT 0 :: 5 Great Falls
The Argonauts needed a half-hour, but went on to post another easy victory against the Hardrockers. Andrew Gillen notched the first of two assists by finding Miguel Mendez (Bonners Ferry, ID) in the 34th minute. Danny Delgadillo doubled the lead just over a minute into the second half on an assist from Andre Zarate (Bonners Ferry, ID), who scored himself 10 minutes later via Gillen. Mendez scored his second of the match just before the hour mark and Antionio Gonzalez capped the scoring in the 83rd. – MORE 
Trinity Lutheran 0 :: 1 Rocky Mountain
Taylor Ita (Havre, MT) provided the lone strike for the Battlin’ Bears at the half-hour mark as they moved to 8-0-1 on the season. – MORE
