GAMEDAY: Carroll at Whitworth x 2, plus Corban v Whitman

It was a NAIA v DIII tripleheader Sunday at Whitworth University in Spokane where the host Pirates took on the Saints from Carroll College and their regional Northwest Conference foe Whitman played host to the Corban Warriors. All three of the Cascade Collegiate Conference sides came away victorious on the day.

In the opening contest of the day the hosts were unable to convert some early forays into the attacking third into anything on the scoreboard. In the 21st minute the Saints were able to snare the lead when Madison Apsey (Boise, ID) took the ball and drove forward, striking a nice effort from about 25 yards that proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Carroll win over Whitworth.

Devan Murfitt (Bozeman, MT) posted her second consecutive shutout with three saves. She also led Carroll to a 3-0 win against Whitman the day before at Whitworth.

The Warriors rebounded from the previous day's defeat to Whitworth by blanking the Missionaries 2-0 in a match they thoroughly controlled, outshooting Whitman 20-3.

The match, however, looked headed to the break scoreless before Nadine Correa sent a looping shot from near the top of the box that dropped in under the crossbar over the reach of the keeper in the 43rd minute.

In the second half of the match Whitman began to scrap for an equalizer, getting their first shots of the game. Corban, though, added some insurance when a ball from Correa found on open Holly Moorman on the left side of the six. Her sharp-angled effort looked headed high, but instead smacked off the underside of the bar and narrowly crossed the line for the goal.

The final match of the day was a thriller as Whitworth and Carroll danced back-and-forth looking for the win in a game with 30 combined shots. In the end, it was Spokane native Eric Hollenbaugh that led the Saints to a 2-1 overtime win with a pair of assists.

The Pirates delivered the first blow in the ninth minute when a free kick from Eric Espinoza went off the bar and was saved by Dominique Beauboeuf, whose rebound went off the post and into the path of Austin Cassity for the opening tally.

A free kick also led to Carroll's equalizer when the scramble led to Hollenbaugh (Spokane, WA) finding Rodrigo Portillo for the strike in the 54th minute.

Despite several opportunities for both teams the match continued to overtime where a corner kick would lead to the game-winning strike from Kyle Thomson (Bigfork, MT) in the 105th minute. He stepped forward in the middle of the box and knocked in the ball that was headed down by Hollenbaugh.
