HS Daily - 9.30.17: Mt Spokane upends Gonzaga Prep

The Wildcats of Mt Spokane picked up their second victory over a 4A opponent just four games into the season, giving the lower classification three in the first two weeks of the Greater Spokane League season.

Meanwhile, Mead edged Ferris in a close contest and Shadle Park put forth another hard-fought effort against a second 4A opponent this week, but Lewis & Clark pulled away in the second half thanks to their deep bench.

Round-up of the action for September 29

Greater Spokane League

Gonzaga Prep 2-3 Mt Spokane
The Wildcats held the lead at the break courtesy of a penalty converted by Payton Stiles in the 24th minute, but the Bullpups quickly leveled things in the second half with a tally from Taylar LaRue in the 47th. Eight minutes later Corynn Vigil put Prep in front, but another penalty in the 65th tied it back up when Emily Williams converted. It looked like things were headed to overtime when Williams scored the game-winner in the final minute for the Wildcats, who also topped Ferris a week ago.

Mead 2-1 Ferris
A free kick from about 25 yards by Olivia Sloan gave the visiting Panthers the advantage 10 minutes into the contest and five minutes later Kendal Houston connected with Tia Frahm for what ended up being the winning tally. Jill Calkins scored via Katie Uphus in the 32nd, but that would complete the scoring for the contest as the two sides played to a stalemate in the second half.

Lewis & Clark 4-1 Shadle Park
The Highlanders played an excellent game against Gonzaga Prep on Wednesday only to come up short. They came out Friday looking to best that effort and for a while it looked like they might have a chance despite seeing Carolyn Moravec score 19 minutes in for the Tigers. They created several chances and in the 26th a second opportunity off a corner was sent into the six by Olivia Wicks and Veronica Mulford stepped forward to chest the ball over the line.

North Central 0-4 Central Valley
Kaelyn Barnes scored twice in the first half as the Bears grabbed control of the match early. Her first came three minutes in. Maggie Ames made it two in the 20th and Barnes pushed it to three in the 32nd. A penalty from Kalle Crouch in the final two minutes capped the game. AJ Crooks and Jenna Lauer combined for the shutout.

Rogers 0-4 University
Brooke Berg scored seven minutes in and Micah Simpson doubled matters two minutes later. Kelsey Crosby picked up her second assist of the night when she found Kora George in the 50th and Grace Rogers tallied the final goal in the 67th. Josie Krum recorded the shutout.
