College Recap - NWC: Whitworth men claim title, women in virtual 3-way tie

The two conference leaders Whitworth and Linfield won their opening games Saturday but slipped up on Sunday, allowing Puget Sound to virtually pull even a point back with a game in hand. The final week will see a dramatic finish with the Pirates playing UPS Wednesday and Linfield Saturday. After suffering their first loss of the season in overtime Saturday, the Whitworth Pirates rebounded Sunday to claim their seventh NWC title in the last nine years – the eighth under 17-year coach Sean Bushey.

A goal from Junpei Tsuji with just under two minutes left gave the Missionaries the road win.

For only the second time this season, the Pirates gave up two goals with Trevor Jenson setting up the first in the 28th and doubling the lead for the hosts three minutes into the second half. Whitworth, though, fought back with Spencer Wolfe delivering a cross that found the head of Robby Ubben in the 61st minute. With eight minutes left Whitworth lost Colin Shockman to a red card but two minutes later the Pirates a handball gave the Pirates the equalizer when Balin Larson converted from the spot to send the match to overtime. In the first minute of the second overtime session Jenson started the play that handed Whitworth their first loss of the year, sending a short corner to Austin Jacobson, who dribbled to the box and fired into the upper left corner. – MORE
