College Recap - WCC & PAC-12: Tough trips west for Gonzaga, Washington State

While the Gonzaga men were idle with the rest of the conference, the lady Zags as well as the Washington State women faced two tough trips to the coast, each facing a pair of nationally ranked opponents. The Cougars nearly pulled off an upset against second-ranked Stanford, but both sides returned home without a point. 


WEST COAST CONFERENCE – WOMEN

Gonzaga 1 :: 4 BYU

Kasey Rubosky, Gonzaga

Trailing since the ninth minute against the fifth-ranked Cougars, a shot off the crossbar by Emily Eckman fell in front of the line where Kasey Rubosky (Spokane, WA)  beat the keeper and defenders to it to level terms in the third minute of the second half. But the nationally-ranked hosts proved too much with three more goals in the next half hour to pull away for the win. – MORE

In their second match against a ranked opponent on the trip, the Zags could not find any luck against the 19th ranked Broncos. The hosts scored twice on headers off of crosses, finding the opener in the 23rd minute and securing the win with four minutes left on a ball sent in from Sofia Huerta (Boise, ID). – MORE

The Cougars fell two goals behind in the first 21 minutes before making a surprise rally against the second-ranked Cardinal. Micaela Castain received a cross from Bethanie Skelton in the 25th minute, turning and firing inside the box to cut the deficit in half. Six minutes before the break things were back to even when Zoe Jeffers one-timed a cross from Kourtney Guetlein. The Cougars nearly picked up the upset, but were denied by several outstanding saves from Emily Oliver in the second half while Mariah Nogueira headed in the winner in the 62nd minute. – MORE

For the second time on the weekend the Cougars fell behind, giving up a goal five seconds into the match through Emi Lawson. Washington State rallied back once again as well, finding the equalizer in the 26th via Nicole Setterlund, who scored put away a ball on a scramble in the box off a free kick. Five minutes into the second half the Cougars took the lead against the 18th-ranked Golden Bears when Korynn Blanksma (Wenatchee, WA) headed in a cross from Jocelyn Jeffers. Cal proved too much though as Ifeoma Onumonu, who started the play on the opener, scored twice in three minutes for the hosts. – MORE
