College Recap - WAC & MWC: Idaho and Boise State playoff bound

It came down to the final game in the WAC, but the Vandals snared the final berth in the conference tournament Sunday with a victory against New Mexico after a difficult loss Friday to one of the conference leaders. Seattle University, meanwhile, clinched their berth Friday before falling to the same Denver team on Sunday, entering the tournament with the fifth seed. Meanwhile in the MWC, San Diego State finished the conference campaign with a perfect 7-0-0 record with a victory while Boise State finished tied for second with New Mexico after a win over Nevada, but will be the third seed in the conference playoffs due to a loss to the Lobos during the season.

Things started off well against one of the WAC’s best teams when Katie Baran (Spokane, WA) delivered a cross to Chelsea Small, who took a quick cut and fired past the visiting keeper 18 minute in. Denver, however, ran off five consecutive unanswered goals en route to the easy win. – MORE

Trailing after seven minutes, the Redhawks answered in the 28th with Carlee Norquist (Boise, ID) and Monique Escalara pairing up to set up Heather Thomas for the equalizer. Julia Besagno would convert a penalty for the win with four minutes remaining.

A Katie Baran (Spokane, WA) corner was flicked on by Chelsie Breen (Cheney, WA) to Nitalia Zuniga for the tap-in six minutes in. From there Erica Hart (Spokane, WA) gave the Vandals an insurmountable three-goal lead, heading in a Jill Flockhart cross in the 40th and added the second easily from six yards on a ball from Baran, who had drawn out the defense. – MORE

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE – WOMEN

The Broncos, 4-0-1 in the last five games, will return to action right away with the opening round match against none other than Nevada on Wednesday in San Diego. A Boise State victory would put them in the semifinals against second-seeded New Mexico for an opportunity to avenge their previous loss. – MORE

A combination play two minutes before the break led to the deciding tally by junior Ashley Hruby. Shannon Schueren drove up the midfield before dishing it off the streaking Dominique Banks along the touchline. Banks then found Hruby, who found the far upper corner from the right side of the area. Senior Megan Blanchard earned her first career shutout and victory with four saves. – MORE
