HS Daily - 10.14.17: Tigers Top Mead in Shootout; CV Clinches

Needing as many points as they can get to help their case for finishing second, Lewis & Clark had to settle for two in a closely-fought contest Friday evening at Mead, winning the contest in a shootout after giving up a late equalizer.

The result, though, muddied the waters a bit more in the GSL race for second as five teams now sit separated by just two points with 7-0 Central Valley having clinched the top spot on points with two games remaining due to 5-2 Gonzaga having dropped a point in a shootout. Prep and Mead are now level at 14 points with University one point back and LC at 12 in the 4A standings.

Mt Spokane is in that group, but also in command among the 3A schools with a four point lead over North Central.

Meanwhile, Ferris is beginning to climb out of the basement thanks to a rout of Rogers Friday that kicked off a three-game swing against 3A opponents to close out the season. Unfortunately it comes to late as it would only max their total to 12 for the season having gone 1-4 against their fellow 4A sides.

Key contests in the final week of play next week will see University at Mead Wednesday and at Gonzaga Prep Friday in a pair of matches while LC plays host to Rogers and Mt Spokane. With the Tigers chasing a better postseason position, their final game could help North Central if the Indians can take advantage of their showdown with Mt Spokane on Wednesday and can get a win against Ferris in their finale.

Round-up of the action for October 13

Greater Spokane League

Lewis & Clark 2-1 SO Mead
Alli Schoultz scored eight minutes in via Camryn Gardner for the Tigers and despite Mead evening up the play after the first 20 minutes, it would take the Panthers nearly the whole contest before they found an equalizer, scoring off a second chance opportunity Olivia Sloan put back in the box that Margo Schoesler finished with three minutes remaining. The match would advance to penalties where, in an unexpected move, Mead put midfielder Katie Kuka in goal for the shootout. She opened by keeping a ball that went off the post from going in, but would step to the spot moments later and hit the other post with her attempt. Another penalty from the Tigers would hit the post, but LC keeper Erin Carney would make two saves, including the final shot of fifth round to give her side the win.
both off post in first round.

Shadle Park 0-3 University
Kelsey Crosby scored in the 25th minute and just shy of the hour mark for the Titans in the victory. The first was set up by Micah Simpson, who scored herself seven minutes into the second half. Madi Szanfransky and Jose Krum split the shutout.

Central Valley 4-1 Mt Spokane
After a scoreless first half the Panthers broke the deadlock in the 47th via Payton Stiles, but an olympico corner kick from Anna Hilbert evened it back up six minutes later. Kaelyn Barnes scored at the hour mark with Michael Pitts and Maggie Ames scoring back-to-back in the 70th and 72nd to lock up the win and the GSL title for the Bears.

North Central 0-3 Gonzaga Prep
Makena Dodson, Maddie Szacik and Chelsea Le scored for the Bullpups in the win with Dodson tallying the opener in the 27th and Szacik 10 minutes later. Le's goal put things out of reach just three minutes into the second half as Eden Elliott cruised to the shutout performance.

Ferris 9-0 Rogers
The Saxons doubled their goal total on the campaign with the result. Jill Calkins scored four and had two assists, propelling her to the top of the GSL scoring chart. Riley Hildebrand also had a big day with two goals and an assist. Gracie Day registered four assists. Also tallying in the contest were Madi Vonbrethorst, Leighton DeMille and Shantae Cutler.
