HS Daily - 10.4.17: Upsets and More Across All Three Leagues

It was a dramatic night across all three leagues Tuesday evening as several contests featured title contenders squaring off and several others featured upset performances from the underdogs.

In MCC Chiawana kept its hot run with the presence of Summer Yates going, reeling in second-place Richland with a victory over the Bombers to pull within one win in the table. Hanford, which came into the night tied with Chiawana in third, attempted to hand Kamiakin it's first loss, but only manage to keep them from getting their max tally of bonus points for the first time.

In the GNL Clarkston won the top-of-the-table clash with East Valley, handing the Knights their first loss while West Valley jumped out of a tie for last with a narrow win over Cheney, who missed an opportunity to pull even with the leaders in wins.

Another contenders clash in the NEA saw Lakeside claim a shootout win against visiting Deer Park after a 2-2 affair. Meanwhile, Riverside stunned visiting Colville to register their first victory of the season.

Round-up of the action for October 3 / Standings at the end

Mid-Columbia Conference

Richland 1-3 Chiawana
In a key clash among title contenders, Summer Yates dropped a ball back to Ruthie Edrington for the opening goal 15 minutes in and scored the second with moments remaining in the half on a great individual effort to double the lead for the Riverhawks. Kylee Alvarez made it three in the second half before Kylee Alvarez got on the board for the Bombers, spoiling Abby Whiston's bid for a shutout.

Walla Walla 7-0 Kennewick
It was another big night for Makena Rietz (3) and Lorena Ramirez (2), who accounted for five of the goals. Jacquelin Gomez scored the final tally of the match. Reilyn Davis and Kirren Gay combined for the shutout.

Pasco 1-4 Southridge
The Suns got goals from Meleah Hill and Serenity Pool in the final five minutes of the first half, but Pasco answered just before the break on a penalty to keep it close. Southridge, though, locked up the win in the second half with a goal from a corner and another tally from Pool.

Kamiakin 2-0 Hanford
Hoping to hand the Braves their first loss and stay in the thick of the title chase, Hanford took the game into the second half scoreless before Aaliyah Valladares converted from the spot in the 52nd. Kahlea Sullivan would add some insurance. Grace Wilbur recorded the shutout for the visitors while Gabby Turner made a whopping 21 saves at the other end, denying the Braves their first point of the season as they came up one short of the full goals scored bonus points.

Great Northern League

East Valley 0-3 Clarkston
Three different players scored for the Bantoms in their upset win over the unbeaten Knights. Anna Sharp scored in the 12th and Makinzie Packwood followed it up in the 15th. Packwood would also set up the final score, finding Emerson Snyder in the final minute of regulation to cap the game. Katelyn Bittle kept the clean sheet.

Cheney 0-1 West Valley
The Blackhawks were delivered a blow in their chase to stay in the title hunt as they fell to the Eagles on the road. Chelsea Koker scored the lone goal in the 21st with an assist from Abby McConnell. Kellie Fitzpatrick recorded the shutout.

Northeast A League

Colville 0-3 Riverside
The winless Rams stunned the visitors to pick up their first points of the season.  Jewels Proctor scored in the 13th minute for an early lead and then found Hanna Phillips in the 54th. Phillips added a second five minutes later to put the match out of reach and Mackenzie Knight finished the shutout performance.

Medical Lake 5-1 Newport
A scoreless stalemate gave way to Makayla Geiger in the second half. Jaxyn Farmen broke the deadlock five minutes in before Geiger went on the rampage, kicking it off with an assist on Nicole Wetherell's tally a minute later. Emily Bronkhorst initially kept Newport close with a goal in the 48th, but Geiger converted a penalty in the 54th and scored two more in the 57th and 70th to push the Cardinals to a big win.

Deer Park 2-3 SO Lakeside
In a back-and-forth affair, the Eagles rued several breakaway opportunities that came up empty in the first half as the visiting Stags held the lead late and took the match to penalties. Lakeside took the initial lead when Alexis Torok fed Maddie Hall in the 17th. Jessie Thomas connected with Carson Gracie-Allen in the 28th and scored the go-ahead goal at the hour mark. In a frenzied finish a restart that came back to Alexis Torok allowed her to feed the ball to Alyssa Figy, who finished from about 12 yards amidst a scrum in the box to tie it up. In the shootout, attempts off the post and one save from Payton Williams allowed the Eagles to win in four rounds, 3-1.
