HS Daily - 10.21.17: Dramatic Ends Result in Top 3A Seed for Wildcats

The matches went down to the wire on the chilly Friday afternoon, but in the end both North Central and Mt Spokane came up short in one-goal decisions against their 4A opposition on the final day of the Greater Spokane League season. The results left Mt Spokane atop the 3A standings. Meanwhile, Lewis & Clark's win over the Wildcats kept them third in the table while Gonzaga Prep finished fourth via a win over University.

North Central 0-1 Ferris
Needing a victory and some help, the Indians again took things to the final moments thanks to the keeping of Payton Flannery, who kept Ferris off the board until the 77th minute. Bailey Warnica scored off an assist from Leighton DeMille. Maya Watson registered the shutout to move Ferris seventh in the table. The loss left NC as the second seed in 3A.

Mt Spokane 3-4 OT Lewis & Clark
The Wildcats were looking for a win to avoid being overtaken by NC for the top 3A seed. The Tigers, though, were also in need of a victory to remain third in 4A, creating a dramatic affair. The Tigers grabbed an initial two-goal lead with Paige Malm and Jackie Brown each registering a goal and assist in the opening 13 minutes. The Wildcats scored twice in the final five minutes of the half, getting goals from Amber Hickman and Gracyn Ulias to even things up. Kiki Bourekis scored via Carolyn Moravec two minutes into the second half to give the Tigers the advantage again. LC looked bound for the victory, but another late strike in the half, this time from Payton Stiles in the 79th, tied things up and force overtime. Nearing the death of extra time and a shootout that would do neither team favors in their worst-case scenarios, Alli Schoultz would strike with a golden goal in the final seconds, nodding in a cross from Erynn Gores. LC got their 4A three seed while Mt Spokane, courtesy of NC's loss stayed at number one in 3A.

University 2-4 Gonzaga Prep
Chelsea Le and Corynn Vigil guided the Bullpups to the win, but it wasn't necessarily easy. Le scored in the 19th minute with Vigil tallying two minutes later on an assist from Angel Denke. Brooke Berg would score in the 26th via Kelsey Crosby to cut the deficit. Le, though, scored again with three minutes in the half by way of Denke. Crosby scored herself in the 48th to pull within one again, but Vigil locked up the result with her second goal with two minutes left in the match.

Mead 4-0 Rogers
Sarah Fram scored in the opening minute and Gabbie Walters struck in the eighth. Megan Cardenas made it three in the 14th and a pair of JV players combined for the final goal in the 21st with Madison Leale scoring on an assist from Kylie Newman. Ashlynn Eggleston combined with JV keeper Jordan Mattox for the shutout.

Central Valley 4-0 Shadle Park
With the regular starter out ill, the Highlanders called upon JV keeper Tayla Remigio and the freshman acquitted herself well in the early going, but the league champions were just too much to keep off the board. A cross knocked in by Megan Robertson in the 33rd got the ball rolling for the Bears. MaKenzie Claypool doubled the lead in the 37th and Kaelyn Barnes made it three just before the break. Kalle Crouch scored the lone goal of the second half. AJ Crooks and Jenna Lauer combined for the shutout.
