HS Daily - 10.24.17: University Knocks Gonzaga Prep Out of Postseason

On the opening day of the postseason in the 4A Greater Spokane League and Mid-Columbia Conference tournament the University Titans upset host Gonzaga Prep 3-2 in overtime just three days after suffering a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Bullpups in the regular season finale.

Further south there were no surprises as Walla Walla rolled to a big win over Pasco thanks to a four-goal night from Makena Rietz.

PLAYOFF RESULTS

4A - Pasco 1-5 Walla Walla
Makena Rietz put the Devils on the board with a penalty in the 12th and immediately followed it up with another tally a minute later. She made it three by completing her hat-trick in the 28th. The Bulldogs snatched a goal before the intermission with a taly in the 39th, but Emoree Lash quickly restored the three goal advantage three minutes into the second half. Rietz added one more to her ledger in the 57th.

4A - University 3-2 OT Gonzaga Prep
The Bullpups led twice, but were unable to put the Titans away as they did four days ago on the same turf. Chelsea Le scored the opener in the 15th and put the hosts back in front with her second in the 30th. University, meanwhile got the initial equalizer in the 27th from Lauren Chester on an assist from Kora George, a senior who came into the night with just one goal to her credit. George went on to score a huge equalizer with just four minutes remaining on an assist from Kelsey Crosby that sent the match to overtime. The pair reversed roles two minutes into extra time with Crosby knocking Gonzaga Prep out of the playoffs.

LEAGUE RESULTS

GNL - Pullman 1-2 SO Cheney
With all the seeds already set going into the playoffs Thursday the Greyhounds unleashed a warning howl to the rest of the league with a tough contest on the road in Cheney. The two were locked in a stalemate until Emma Scott scored for the hosts in the 47th minute, but Mackenzie Oldroyd scored her first of the year in the 62nd to even things up. The match went the distance before Melissa Aris made two stops in the tiebreaker shootout to give Cheney the win.
