INW College Recap - Week 6: DI round-up; Bengals & Grizzlies still deadlocked in Big Sky

With conference play underway for most of the Division I programs, the Big Sky kicked things off this week with a championship rematch between Idaho State and Montana, who ended up playing to a third consecutive draw between the two programs. Meanwhile, in their Pac-12 opener Washington State was surprisingly stymied by the Oregon Ducks in a scoreless draw.

Thursday, September 26 

Montana 0 :: 2 Weber State
The Grizzlies were unable to capitalize three minutes into the contest when Mackenzie Akins had a one-on-one with the keeper and again in the 13th minute when she struck the post. It proved costly as the hosts took scored two minutes before the break and doubled the advantage in the 71st. MORE

Eastern Washington 0 :: 1 Idaho State 
In a tight contest, the Bengals avenged last year's defeat on the road in the 58th minute when Kiley Godfrey sent a cross into the six to Lauren Bermudez, who dished it off to an open Whitney Peterson (Meridian, ID) for the finish. MORE

Eastern Washington 0 :: 3 Weber State
The Eagles gave up two in the first half and were unable to rally with their only good chance, which finished in the back of the, being negated by an offside call. Goalkeeper Nathalie Schwery shared duties in goal with freshman Clara Elsholz, each making three saves in their respective half. MORE

Montana 1 :: 1 Idaho State
The series between the two remains in a stalemate. They played to yet another tie after playing to a draw during the season last year, finishing tied for the season title and then playing to a draw again in the playoff final. Montana found a bit of fortune in the 61st minute when a ball ricocheted off a Bengal to an open Maddey Frey (Kalispell, MT), who put it away from close range. Idaho State pulled even in the 76th when Whitney Peterson (Meridian, ID) tallied her second of the weekend, scoring from 10 yards on a ball from Tara Bice. MORE - ISU  | UM

North Dakota 0 :: 1 Portland State
Torie Morris (Bend, OR) put the Vikings on the board three minutes into the contest as Portland State dominated the contest, allowing Caitlin Plese (Spokane Shine) to record the shutout with one save.

The contest proved to be a defensive stalemate in which the Cougars did not have a truly dangerous until 30 second into overtime when Micaela Castain sent a header off the crossbar and the rebound effort by Nicole Setterlund smacked off a Cougar teammate who was still on the line from the scramble. On a wet and blustery afternoon, the Zags dominated the contest but were unable to find the back of the net until they had the wind at their backs in the second half. Nick Hamer (Spokane, WA) found Jakob Granlund in the 55th and Lars Ludwigs revived a play with a well-paced ball in the box in the 68th that Clark Phillips redirected into an open net. Seattle scored on a counter up the left side in the 78th, but it was one of their very few opportunities on the day. INWsn REPORT

The Bulldog women picked up the road win off a goal kick in the 23rd minute of the contest. Christie Tombari's (Spokane, WA) restart well up the field was flicked on by Emily Eckman, connecting with Kasey Rubosky (Spokane, WA), who in turn slipped it to Tori Lee, who found Karley Baggerly to create a one-on-one with the keeper that she won. Kansas 2 :: 3 Santa Clara
The Broncos' star striker Sofia Huerta (Boise, ID) led the hosts to the victory with a hand in all three goals. Huerta scored the opener five minutes in only to see Kansas tie it up less than a minute later. She put Santa Clara back in front in the 30th minute and scored what proved to be the winner in the 54th.

Gonzaga 1 :: 2 Cal State Fullerton
Trailing since the 29th minute, the Bulldogs pulled even in the 71st when Sila Tuiofea blocked a clearance attempt by the goalkeeper. The deflected ball fell to Mikayla Anderson, who worked around the keeper and sent it back to Tuiofea for the open-netter. Less than three minutes later, though, the hosts restored the advantage. Despite a lot of pressure from the Broncos in the late stages, it looked like the contest was destined for overtime when freshman Kelli Drobney put away a loose ball inside the box in the 88th minute. MORE

In a back and forth contest, the Vandals never trailed against the hosts, taking the lead in the 21st when a corner fell to Nitalia Zuniga, who found Breanna Wilson (Bend, OR) for the finish. The Aggies pulled even five minutes later, but Zuniga, the star of the game with three assists, connected with Emily Ngan in the 36th to restore the lead on a 20-yard effort. NMS evened things up again seven minutes into the second half, but Zuniga delivered a free kick to Elexis Schlossarek, who ripped a shot from 30 yards in off the crossbar. MORE

Kansas City 2 :: OT :: 1 Idaho
The Vandals jumped in front in the 21st minute when Katie Baran (Spokane, WA) found Alyssa Lloyd (Spokane, WA) inside the box for the opening tally. The hosts, though, finally found an equalizer with 15 minutes left and scored in the final minute of the first overtime session for the win. MORE

Utah Valley 5 :: 3 Grand Canyon 
The Wolverines won their fourth straight in a thriller. Haley Curtis (Yakima, WA) helped put UVU on the board first when she set up the opener. The hosts rallied to take the lead before the Wolverines pulled level just before the break. Curtis would add another assist in the 66th when her effort rang off the left post with the rebound being put in by a teammate for what proved to be the winner.
