INW College Recap - Week 9: DI round-up - Boise State wins in advance of big homestand

Though they currently sit fourth in the conference, the Boise State Broncos posted a 3-0 victory at Colorado to remain in a tight group in contention for the regular season title with the top two teams, San Diego State and New Mexico, coming to town this week. It was a tough week for Gonzaga as the men suffered their first conference loss at Santa Clara after nipping visiting Portland midweek and the women dropped an overtime decision at fifth-ranked Portland in a bizarre finish.

In the Big Sky, Idaho State split their two games this week amidst a record-setting performance from Amanda Ellsworth while the Montana Grizzlies snared a narrow victory over visiting Eastern Washington. In the Palouse, it was a depressing week as Washington State lost at home to the struggling Beavers and Idaho dropped a pair of one-goal decisions at home.

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE - WOMEN

Sunday, October 20

Boise State 3 :: 0 Colorado State
The Broncos dominated the first half with six shots to none, but were kept off the board amidst near winter-like weather in Fort Collins until a penalty broke the deadlock in the 53rd. Brooke Heidemann (Meridian, ID) converted after the handball and four minutes later Kayla Tucker drove down the right side, finding Ashley Hruby for the second. Freshman Baylee Blaser (Boise, ID) rounded out the scoring in the 89th. MORE

WEST COAST CONFERENCE - MEN

Wednesday, October 16

Portland 0 :: 1 Gonzaga
The young duo of sophomore Conner Bevans and freshman Jakob Granlund continue to lead the Bulldogs offensively, though it was the defense that played center stage yet again with another shutout performance. The Zags got the winner in the 82nd minute when Bevans directed a cross from the right side to the streaking duo of Granlund and junior Clark Phillips, but it was Granlund connecting for the deciding strike with a sliding effort that went in off the near post. MORE

Friday, October 18

Gonzaga 1 :: 2 Santa Clara
The Bulldogs took the lead in the 18th minute after Nick Hamer (Spokane, WA) stole the ball on a Santa Clara counter and drove down the left side into the box before the keeper made a sliding challenge for the save at the six, but the ball popped out to Conner Bevans for the open goal finish. The Broncos however, pulled even and grabbed a late win with two goals from Harrison Hanley in the 36th and 79th minutes, handing the Bulldogs their first conference loss. MORE

WEST COAST CONFERENCE - WOMEN

Friday, October 18

Santa Clara 4 :: 0 Saint Mary's
The Broncos cruised to the victory with four first half goals, including the second coming from Sofia Huerta (Boise, ID).

Saturday, October 19

Gonzaga 1 :: OT :: 2 Portland
The Bulldogs took the fifth-ranked Pilots to overtime only to see the match end in bizarre fashion as what was to be a goal kick turned into an indirect free kick 15 yards out after the official sent off coach Amy Edwards with a red card and deemed the offending moment occurred during the run of play. The initial effort was stopped but the Pilots recovered the rebound and with a quick pass found the game-winner from 18 yards out. After falling behind three minutes into the second half on an eight-yard finish, the Zags found the equalizer with just over seven minutes remaining when Tori Lee's cross and a dangerous run from Karley Baggerly forced a defender to err on a clearance and put it in her own goal. Sunday, October 20

Santa Clara 2 :: 0 Pacific
Sofia Huerta (Boise, ID) scored the second goal again in a shutout victory, tallying in the 27th minute for the Broncos.

Stacey Peterson Allen is a cousin of current teammate Whitney Peterson. Sacramento State spoiled the shutout in the 89th minute. MORE

WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE - WOMEN

Friday, October 18

Bakersfield 1 :: 0 Idaho
A free kick goal given up just over five minutes into the match stood as the Vandals were unable to find an equalizer as they narrowly outshot the visitors 18-16. MORE

Sunday, October 20

Utah Valley 3 :: OT :: 2 Idaho
The Vandals gave up another early goal, but found an answer in the 15th minute when a cross from Katie Baran (Spokane, WA) found Gabby Leong eight yards out from goal. Haley Curtis (Yakima, WA) created the second go-ahead goal for the Wolverines early in the second half when her header was saved by goalkeeper Torell Stewart, but fell to Taylor Kirk in the 50th for the finish. Freshman Kavita Battan made a nice run in the 66th minute, driving into the middle of the box and finding the back of the net from about 15 yards out, sending the game, ultimately, to overtime where Curtis came up big again for Utah Valley. An intercepted clearance was played off to Kirk, who found Curtis about 10 yards out from goal where she sent the winning strike past Stewart, who was only able to get a piece of it as it went by.
