INW College Recap - Week 7: GNAC & NWC - MSUB & NNU men pick up weekend sweeps

In the GNAC this week both MSU-Billings and Northwest Nazarene men's sides swept their respective pair of games, but the big result was the 2-1 victory goalkeeper Cody Lang (Spokane, WA) helped lead Seattle Pacific to over top-ranked Simon Fraser. Meanwhile in the NWC it was a rough road week for Whitman and Whitworth with only two points between the four teams as the Pirates picked up a pair of draws at Pacific Lutheran.

Thursday, October 3 

South Dakota Mines 2 :: 4 MSU-Billings 
It looked like it was going to be a tight contest between the two winless sides with Haley Klarich's goal on a ball from Aodhan Brownlee in the 31st minute for MSUB serving as the lone goal in the first half, but the second half turned into a completely different game. Klarich (Helena, MT) scored his second of the game courtesy of Landon Horst six minutes in, but the two-goal home lead was not enough as the visitors rallied to pull even by the 68th minute. The Yellowjackets answered right back to reclaim the lead though with Michael Aringer converting from the spot after a handball, and Sam Butterworth secured their first win of the campaign with a strike from 20 yards in the 81st. Mary 0 :: 4 Northwest Nazarene 
Fredy Razo scored a goal and set up two others in the victory. He combined with Luke Broz (Boise, ID) to set up Evan Horwood in the 43rd minute and then scored off a Jaime Torres cross less than a minute later for a two-goal advantage at the break. Razo and Torres then linked up to find Austin Thomas (Lewiston, ID) to make it three eight minutes into the second half. Torres then combined with Cedric Dinane in the 62nd to set up Layne Leisten's (Eagle, ID) diving header. Ryan Foo made six saves for the shutout. MORE

Simon Fraser 1 :: 2 Seattle Pacific 
The Falcons stunned the nation's top-ranked team with a game-winning goal and assist from Danny Olivas in addition to five stops from Cody Lang (Spokane, WA) in goal. MORE

Saturday, October 5 

Mary 0 :: 1 MSU-Billings 
Facing a second winless team on the weekend, the Yellowjackets picked up their second victory with a 57th minute strike from 15 yards out by Haley Klarich (Helena, MT) off a ball headed down by Thorge Jess. MORE

South Dakota Mines 0 :: 3 Northwest Nazarene 
Fifteen minutes in Jaime Torres flicked a ball from Emmett Demirelli onto Fredy Razo for the opening goal of the contest. Cedric Dinane converted from the spot in the 23rd after he was fouled in the box and Dylan Coffee scored from 20 yards after a defensive turnover in the 76th. MORE

Western Washington 1 :: 1 Seattle Pacific
Trailing since the 24th minute, the Falcons pulled even on a 12-yard header from Bryson Pavel (Boise, ID) less than a minute into the second half with Cody Lang (Spokane, WA) needing to only make two saves as SPU outshot the visitors 26-11.

MSU-Billings 2 :: 1 Saint Martin's 
After a scoreless first half the Yellowjackets fell behind seven minutes into the second half, but put things back level when Chelsea Shuman (Kalispell, MT) put it away from 12 yards. Shuman then turned provider with just over a minute left, crossing the ball from the corner and finding Alisa Sagdhal for a close-range finish. MORE

Northwest Nazarene 0 :: 4 Western Oregon 
The Crusaders gave up two goals in each half in the loss. MORE

Central Washington 3 :: 2 Simon Fraser 
Winless SFU was a more difficult opponent than expected as they equalized twice before the Wildcats ultimately prevailed. Lauren Duty put CWU in front 40 minutes in on a ball from Danielle Brandli only to see the hosts pull even two minutes later. Hadlie Farrand restored the lead after the goalkeeper gave away the ball in the 56th and SFU evened it up again in the 67th. Morgan Wood's through ball in the 75th sent Savanna Moorehouse on a game-winning breakaway. MORE

MSU-Billings 0 :: 2 Western Oregon
Outshot 13-5 in the game, the Yellowjackets gave up a goal in each half in the loss. MORE

Northwest Nazarene 0 :: 2 Saint Martin's 
The two sides were in a stalemate until the Crusaders gave up a pair of goals in the final 17 minutes. MORE

Central Washington 0 :: 2 Western Washington 
The second-ranked Vikings kept their perfect record intact with a pair of goals in the final 13 minutes, scoring on a penalty after handball and securing matters in the final seconds off a corner. MORE

The Missionaries outshot the Loggers 11-7 in regulation and had a man advantage since the 33rd minute, but the missed opportunities proved costly as a foul in overtime allowed the hosts to grab the win via a penalty kick in the 94th minute. MORE

Whitworth 1 :: 1 Pacific Lutheran 
Zach Waldher (Whitefish, MT) found Karl Muelheims (Spokane, WA) five yards from goal on the left side for the opening tally with five minutes remaining in the first half and the Pirates were seven minutes away from the road win when the sixth-ranked Lutes found the equalizer. MORE

Willamette 1 :: 1 Pacific 
Ian Farley (Spokane, WA) put Pacific in front five minutes into the second half with a header on a cross from Nicolas Kaminsky.

Sunday, October 6 

Whitman 1 :: 3 Pacific Lutheran
Trailing since the 37th minute, the Missionaries pulled even in the 74th when Bridger Sellegren (Bozeman, MT) scored from 10 yards on a ball from Logan Grime. A mishandled ball by keeper Niko Contos (Boise, ID), however, allowed the hosts to reclaim the lead in the 83rd, which was followed up by an insurance goal just a minute later. MORE

Two goals in a five minutes span put the hosts up by a pair at the hour mark with Whitworth finding their only strike in an effort to rally via Robby Ubben, who scored from the top of the box after a long ball from Matt Bray (Spokane, WA) in the 83rd. MORE

Ian Farley (Spokane, WA) converted a penalty in the 80th minute, but it was too late as the Boxers already trailed by three.

A corner kick in the second minute proved to be the difference as the Lutes held on despite being outshot 10-5 in the contest. MORE

Whitworth 1 :: 2 Puget Sound 
Jami Hegg (Spokane, WA) put the Pirates on the board just two minutes into the contest, converting from the spot after Tiara Pajimola (Spokane, WA) was fouled in the box. The hosts, however, pulled even nine minutes later and were in front by the break, cruising to the victory with a 28-5 advantage in shots by the final whistle. MORE
