INW College Recap - Week 9: GNAC & NWC - Whitworth gets rare sweep of UPS, PLU; Northwest Nazarene ties unbeaten SPU

The Whitworth men have not had a home sweep of fellow regular NWC title contenders Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran since 2005, but the Pirates completed the feat with an impressive 1-0 victory against the Loggers in which they did not allow a shot on goal, handing them their first conference loss, and then downed the Lutes in convincing fashion, 4-1, a day after Pacific Lutheran fell 1-0 on the very last second of overtime at Whitman. Meanwhile, Northwest Nazarene posted an impressive result in GNAC play, getting a last-minute goal to tie unbeaten Seattle Pacific 2-2.

NORTHWEST CONFERENCE - MEN
Whitman Athletics

Saturday, October 19

Puget Sound 0 :: 1 Whitworth
The defense made a statement as the Pirates did not allow a single shot on goal by the perfect Loggers, allowing Robby Ubben's tally in the 13th minute to stand as the winner and handing Puget Sound their first conference loss. INWsn REPORT

Pacific Lutheran 0 :: OT :: 1 Whitman
The Missionaries handed the Lutes just their second loss, and did so in dramatic fashion as Reid Shaw collected a lengthy goal kick from Niko Contos and sent it in to Junpei Tsuji for the winner with just one second left on the clock in overtime - LITERALLY. Contos only needed to make one save while his counterpart was burned after making 10 stops as the Lutes were outshot 27-7 for the contest. MORE

Sunday, October 20

Pacific Lutheran 1 :: 4 Whitworth
Sam Selisch propelled the Pirates to an early two-goal lead with a fantastic run through the defense just two minutes into the contest that he finished nicely and he was a key part of the play that led to David Starkovich being fouled in the box for the 24th minute penalty converted by Balin Larson. An own goal on a Spencer Wolfe free kick made the lead three in the 35th and Starkovich found the head of Sam Engle in the 69th to cap the scoring. INWsn REPORT

Puget Sound 2 :: 0 Whitman
The thrill of victory from the previous day would not return for the Missionaries as the Loggers rebounded from their first loss the day before with a pair of first half goals. MORE

Pacific 1 :: 3 Willamette
Trailing by two, Steen Shober's (Missoula, MT) corner found the head of Ian Farley (Spokane, WA) just outside the six to cut the lead in half in the 62st, but the Bearcats restored the difference just six minutes later.
