DI / DII ROUND-UP: Bozeman's Werner leads Stanford past UW, OSU

At the Division I level it was a tough week for area sides with the exception of Boise State which posted a draw and a win on the road in California over the weekend to remain near the top of the Mountain West. The star of the week was Bozeman, MT native Sam Werner, who guided Stanford to narrow 1-0 victories against Washington and Oregon State.

Meanwhile in Division II, overtime was still a major role player for the GNAC men. Last week five of the six matches went to extra time. This week four of the six went past the 90-minute mark. It also spilled onto the women's side of things this week with four of the eight contests needed overtime.

The headliner for the week was the Northwest Nazarene men posting a 2-2 draw against second ranked Simon Fraser on the road. They went on to also pick up a victory on the weekend. The ladies at Central Washington also had a good week, also picking up a draw and a win for the week.

Portland 2 :: 1 Gonzaga
The Pilots took the lead 11 minutes in when a saved shot was knocked in on the rebound but 10 minutes later the Bulldogs pulled even when Callie Best (Spokane, WA) scored on a ball from Karley Baggerly (Spokane Shadow WFT). It looked like the contest was headed to overtime when a long ball forward created a one-on-one for Portland with goalkeeper Sarah Swanson, but before she could make a stop the attacker was tackled from behind. The Pilots converted from the spot with just seven seconds remaining on the clock.  MORE [+]

Fresno State 1 :: 2 Boise State
A through ball from Baylee Blaser (Boise, ID) set up Kristina Serres for the opening strike of the contest 24 minutes in, but the visitors answered five minutes before the break to even things up. Raimee Sherle, though, was the hero yet again for the Broncos, scoring from about five yards out in the 57th minute after collecting a loose ball that was pinballing in the box. It was her fourth game-winner of the year.  MORE [+]

Arizona State 1 :: OT :: 2 Washington State
The losing skid finally came to an end for the Cougars, but it took a little extra work to do so. A penalty allowed the Sun Devils to grab the lead in the 19th minute and the visitors, despite being vastly outshot in the contest kept the Cougars at bay until a rebound of a Kaitlyn Johnson shot was put away by Katie Jones with just under eight minutes remaining. The late equalizer sent the contest to overtime where Morgan Weaver found the winner in the 106th minute off a long through ball from Grace Hancock.  MORE [+]

DI MEN  #############

Sunday, October 9

Portland 5 :: 1 Gonzaga
Things were looking hopeful for the Bulldogs when they went to the locker room in front on their only shot of the first half, a Jakob Granlund penalty kick in the 23rd minute after he was fouled in the box. The Zags, though, were outshot 6-1 in the half and it was a warning of what was about to come as the Pilots came out and just drubbed the hosts in the opening 20 minutes of the second for five goals. They evened things up in the 53rd and took the lead on a free kick in the 60th. A penalty in the 61st pushed the lead to two and another two goals put the match out of reach by the 66th minute. It was the first time the Bulldogs had allowed five goals in a game since a 5-1 road loss to Portland in October of 2009 and the first time at home since a 5-0 Pilots win in the 1999 season finale.  MORE [+]

ELSEWHERE:  Sam Werner (Bozeman, MT) set up the lone goal for Stanford in the 78th minute for a 1-0 victory at 16th ranked Washington Thursday as well as creating the 105th minute overtime winner in a 1-0 victory at Oregon State Sunday.

An own goal on a corner gave SFU the lead 33 minutes in with Logan Wood scoring in the 39th off a rebound from a Linus Mansson free kick. The visitors went back in front three minutes after the break but another set piece from Mansson created the second equalizer when his corner was punched out but put back in off the crossbar by a Rene Duevel header in the 62nd.  MORE [+]
