HS DAILY - 10.5.16: Hanford tops Kamiakin and new leaders for GNL, NEA

There were plenty of interesting results Tuesday evening, chief of them being Kamiakin suffering a narrow 1-0 loss at home at the hands of Hanford that has put four teams bunched together in the Mid Columbia Conference with six and five victories. Also winning with a single goal on the road was West Valley, who remain unbeaten through six in the Columbia Basin Big Nine. They edged Davis, which dropped its third straight and are part of a pack of four teams with three wins behind the Rams.

In the greater Spokane area, both the Great Northern League and Northeast A League have new leaders with Cheney and Deer Park both falling at home. Cheney dropped a 3-2 decision to one-win West Valley, allowing East Valley to pass them with a 1-0 victory at home against Clarkston. Medical Lake blasted Newport 6-2 to move past Deer Park, which fell at home to Lakeside in a wild 6-4 contest.

Here's a look around the action from Tuesday...

MCC #####

Hanford 1-0 Kamiakin: The Braves looked like they were running away from the pack with Southridge, but Hanford climbed the table with the upset and kept second place a viable option for the peloton. After a scoreless first half Taylor Matheny found the back of the net on a long shot off a ball from Sadie Newsom in the 47th for the Falcons. Kelsee Winston made 11 saves in the narrow shutout victory. The Braves have just two goals in their last three games.

Chiawana 2-1 Richland: The Riverhawks were more than happy to welcome US youth international Summer Yates back to MCC soccer. The U15 GNT striker hit for two goals on the night in leading Chiawana, which had lost three of the last four, to the win. She scored both goals for the Riverhawks in the opening 20 minutes, nodding in a free kick from Kailey Leavens in the third minute and collecting a through ball from Amber Gama in the 20th. Richland gave themselves hope when a loose rebound allowed Katie Sinclair to find Sophie Mendoza in the 74th for their goal.

Southridge 4-1 Pasco: The Bulldogs took the initial lead 19 minutes into the match and held onto it until a handball int he 54th allowed Haley Thomas to tie it up from the spot. McKaley Goffard put the Suns in front in the 66th and Kendall Pope doubled the lead in the 70th. Goffard capped the scoring with four minutes remaining.

Kennewick 3-4 OT Walla Walla: In a back-and-forth contest, the Blue Devils picked up their second win of the year season while dashing the Lions' hopes of a first. Kenna Burrato scored the opening goal 15 minutes in and added another for a 2-1 lead at the break. Lorena Ramirez had both assists and played an even bigger role later. The visitors tied things up early after intermission but Ramirez restored the Blue Devils lead in the 49th. Kennewick against pulled even in the 64th and the two remained level until Ramirez tallied her second in overtime for the victory.

CBBN #####

West Valley 1-0 Davis:  Looking to get back in the title hunt after two consecutive losses, the Pirates came up just a tad short against the league leading Rams. West Valley's Jada Stevenson and Davis' Eliza Berman kept each other sides at bay with the Rams keeper making three saves and Berman seven, but it was a strike from Natalie Nagle with five minutes remaining that Berman was unable to deny. It was the third consecutive game Davis has been shutout.

Eastmont 5-0 Eisenhower:  The Wildcats moved into the thick of the chase for second in the Big 9 with the easy victory over winless Eisenhower. Isley Kuske led the way with a pair of goals and Maria Mendoza, Kara Pinard and Andrey Lasswell each scored in the one-sided result. No further info is available.

Moses Lake @ Sunnyside - NO REPORT

NL - Cashmere 2-3 SO Wenatchee: In a non-league contest, the Panthers rallied to tie 1A side Cashmere and get the win via a shootout.

GNL #####

West Valley 3-2 Cheney:  The Eagles surprised the league-leading Blackhawks for their second win of the season, getting two goals in the opening 10 minutes. Abby McConnell scored seven minutes in and Chelsea Koker netted on a ball from Baylee Trejo three minutes later. Cheney answered at the half-hour mark on a strike from Madison O'Callaghan, but Koker fed Akylah Beitey six minutes into the second half to restore the much-needed two goal margin as Katarina Smith scored a second for Cheney in the 65th.

Clarkston 0-1 East Valley:  The sides were deadlocked for much of the match with Katelyn Bittle making 10 saves for the visiting Bantams, but it was not enough as Kelsy Ross struck with eight minutes remaining to give the Knights the narrow win. Kari Bromley made two saves for the shutout win, helping East Valley move into first.

NEA #####

Riverside 3-2 Colville:  Tayler Moug found Jamie Conner three minutes into the contest to give the Rams the lead on the road but McCallaster answered 16 minutes later via Rainer. The two remained on even terms until Kirsten Stickney scored her ninth NEA goal of the season in the 50th. The Indians looked headed toward a win, but the scored twice in the final 10 minutes to put the teams level in the table at 3-5-0. Callie Pangerl fed Jayden Fay in the 70th minute and Conner scored her second of the game and fourth of the season with two minutes remaining for the victory.

Lakeside 6-4 Deer Park:  The league leading Stags gave up as many goals in this one game as they had done in their previous seven as the Eagles were able to put six on the board to knock off Deer Park in a back-and-forth affair.

The hosts grabbed a quick lead seven minutes in courtesy of Jessie Thomas on a ball from Emmy Moore, but the Stag duo were up against a duo from the Eagles that matched them with Alyssa Figy scoring via Hannah Mitchell in the seventh. In the 17th, Moore found Thomas again to reclaim the lead only to see Figy feed Mitchell for another equalizer in the 24th. Lakeside then took their first lead when Lexi Torok connected with her sister Lizzie in the 29th. Figy then pushed the lead to two in the 36th, but Thomas turned provider for Moore a minute later for a 4-3 Lakeside lead at the break.

In the second half Mykayla Cummings found Mitchell in the 51st and Lexi Torok scored two minutes later to give the Eagles a three goal advantage. All Deer Park could find in their attempt to rally was a Courtney Stark goal in the 79th.

Newport 2-6 Medical Lake:  The two sides traded goals early with Newport briefly holding the lead and the two going to the break even before the Cardinals exploded for four in the second half.

Nicole Wetherall put Medical Lake in front nine minutes in but Huang equalized for the Grizzlies in the 18th and Lewis put them in front three minutes later. Mikayla Geiger, though, found Jayda Noble in the 28th to even it up at two. In the second half it was all Geiger and Noble as the two traded goals. Geiger tallied in the 46th and 58th and Noble struck two minutes after each as they Cardinals rolled to the win and atop the table.
