HS DAILY - 10.14.16: Deer Park tops Medical Lake in shootout, NEA race tightens

Idle Mid-Columbia Conference leader Southridge has company atop the table with Hanford drubbing Kennewick to move to 9-2-0 for the season. Not far behind are Chiawana and Kamiakin. All three posted shutout wins Thursday evening to create a group of four now vying for the regular season league title before the classifications split for the postseason. Chiawana also won comfortably while Kamiakin snared a last-second victory at Richland, which now finds itself two games back of the lead pack.

The race between four schools for the second seed in the Columbia Basin Big Nine postseason continues to see nobody stepping up to pull away. The Davis Pirates were in position to do so in Wenatchee but came up empty against the Panthers, who moved into a tie for second with the Pirates. Eastmont and Moses Lake sit just one game back of the duo.

There were no surprises in the Great Northern League, but in the Northeast A League the race for the top spot tightened up with Deer Park edging leader Medical Lake via shootout in a top of the table clash while third place Lakeside was victorious. The results now have the top three within five points of one another with two games remaining for the Stags and Eagles and just one for the Cardinals.

Here's a look around the action from Thursday...

MCC #####

Kennewick 0-7 Hanford:  Taylor Matheny scored twice in the first half and finished a hat-trick performance with a strike in the second half. She also had an assist. Dani Mendoza provided a goal and two assists with Sadie Newsom also setting up two scores. Also tallying on the night was Jessica Maher, Tory Romero and Lucy Cort. Kelsee Winston and Gabby Turner combined for the shutout.

Kamiakin 1-0 Richland:  Sitting second just a couple weeks ago, the Braves found themselves facing a possible third loss in four outings Thursday night as the Bombers, sitting one game back, took the match to the cusp of moving to overtime before Izzy Conover found Alexa Hazel with just 30 seconds remaining in the match. Richland's Kiara Litka had eight saves to that point while her counterpart Grace Wilbur finished the shutout with 11.

Pasco 0-3 Chiawana:  Since her return, you could almost substitute U16 YNT player Summer Yates' name for Chiawana when talking about the team's results. Yates scored all three goals Thursday night. She tallied the first in the 27th minute and again three minutes later. Kailey Leavens, JuliAnna Ventura and Amber Gama set up the goals with Alisha Ramos recording the shutout.

West Valley 3-0 Moses Lake:  The league leaders had little trouble on the road with Kendall Sharp putting the Rams on the board in the 11th by knocking home a rebound and Megan Lee doubling the advantage in the 25th with a free kick. Riley Steele put the match out of reach with a strike at the hour mark.

Davis 1-3 Wenatchee:  The Panthers built up a two goal lead, but Gladys Manriquez scored before the break to pull the Pirates within one. The hosts, though, added another insurance tally in the second half to secure the result. No other details available.

Sunnyside 4-1 Eisenhower:  No details available.

GNL #####

Cheney 2-1 Pullman:  The cellar dwellers gave Cheney a bit of a challenge, pulling even in the 31st on a goal from Sierra Robinson. The equalizer came five minutes after Emma Scott put Cheney in front. Kailey Estrellado, however, tallied four minutes before halftime to put the Blackhawks back in front for good as they held on for the win in the rain-soaked contest.

West Valley 2-3 OT Clarkston: In a back-and-forth contest, the visiting Eagles took the lead twice only to see Clarkston prevail a minute into overtime thanks to a goal from Makinzie Packwood, who tallied all three on the day for the Bantams. A Clarkston 26th minute own goal was the only goal in the first half, but the West Valley lead did not last long after the break with Kaela Southwick finding Packwood for the first equalizer in the 46th. Frankie Schade converted a penalty in the 58th to give the Eagles the lead again, but the Southwick-Packwood combo struck again to even things up in the 67th. Taylen Wohl set up Packwood's winner.

NEA #####

Medical Lake 2-3 SO Deer Park:  The two league leaders were scoreless through the first half of play, but the contest turned to a thrilling back-and-forth affair in the second half. Makayla Geiger gave the Cardinals the lead four minutes after intermission, but Emmy Moore answered for the Stags in the 48th. Jaxyn Farmen put the top side back in front with a potential late winner in the 76th only to see the hosts tie it up again with two minutes remaining via Jessie Thomas. Things went back to a stalemate for the overtime with Deer Park prevailing in the tiebreaker by a 3-2 score.

Newport 0-3 Lakeside:  Hannah Mitchell scored just seven minutes into the contest to give the Eagles the early lead. They put the match away in the second half with Alyssa Figy scoring in the 54th and Mitchell earning her second in the 61st. Payton Williams recorded the shutout.

Freeman 3-0 Colville:  Hannah Pylant made 11 saves for the shutout while six different players got on the ledger for the scoring. Brynn Van Orden scored the lone goal of the first half on an assist from Cassidy Crosswhite with two minutes remaining. Lindsay Balkenbush doubled the advantage on a ball form Cheyanne Groat in the 50th and Ysabella Panzeri capped things via Chloe Thosath in the 66th.
