LD COLLEGE ROUND-UP: Whitworth sweeps, lady Pirates up to third


Northwest Conference leader Whitworth men topped rival Whitman 2-1 in their lone contest of the week, but the story continues to be the Pirate women, who posted two more victories to climb to third in the league.

Meanwhile, in the Cascade Conference results were mixed for the region's teams. Carroll, though, swept in their matches against Great Falls.

Whitworth 2 :: 1 Whitman 
The two regional rivals near went an hour in a stalemate before Whitworth's Austin Cassity found Jonah Snyder in the 60th minute for the opening tally. The hosts outshot the league leading Pirates looking for an equalizer and were able to even things up from the penalty spot in the 85th minute when Noah Cavanaugh converted after Jacob Fritz was fouled in the box. Just two minutes later, though, Whitworth reclaimed the lead when Alfredo Ornelas put Rylan Berriman behind the defense int he 87th minute for the winner. MORE:  Whitworth [+]  Whitman [+]  

Puget Sound 0 :: OT :: 1 Pacific Lutheran
In the showdown of the two west side rivals, it was east sider Jackson Moore (Spokane, WA) that delivered the deciding tally after a 105 minute stalemate, allowing Pacific and Willamette to move past the Loggers in the table.

Pacific 0 :: 1 Whitworth 
The two sides were scoreless through the first half, but as the game wore on the host Pirates assumed more control of the possession and the contest. Five minutes into the second half Leah Corra won the ball along the endline and delivered the ball into the box, finding McKenzie Hemp (Kalispell, MT) for what stood as the game-winner despite Whitworth dominating the rest of the contest and outshooting the visiting Boxers 13-2 in the second half. Sienna Tanner (Spokane, WA / Shadow WFT) only needed two saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]

Linfield 1 :: 0 Whitman 
The contest was locked in a scoreless stalemate until the Wildcats found what held as the winner in the 79th minute on the rebound of a saved penalty with Sarah Bailey (Bend, OR) recording five saves for the shutout. Haley Case made seven stops for the Missionaries in the tight match.  MORE [+]

Sarah Burns (Kennewick, WA) set up PLU's final goal of the match in the 89th minute.

Linfield 1 :: 2 Whitworth 
The Pirates outshot the visitors 9-4 in the first half but found themselves trailing at halftime off a corner kick led to the Wildcats go-ahead goal in the 39th. Courtney Potter, though, fed Kelly Wucherer for the equalizer in the 68th minute and Arielle Van Peursem provided the game-winner in the 83rd minute on a through ball from McKenzie Hemp (Kalispell, MT), moving the Pirates into third in the conference behind the unbeaten duo of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran, who both visit Spokane this week.  MORE [+]  


Pacific 2 :: 4 Whitman
Unlike the day before, there was plenty of scoring in Walla Walla. Lena de Guzman put the Missionaries in front after just eight minutes. Chelsea Day set up Pagan Hetherington in the 13th before tallying herself in the 21st for a commanding lead. Kristin Brady made it four in the 35th. The visiting Boxers would get two in the second half, but the hole was too much to dig out of as the Missionaries celebrated their first victory of the entire 2016 season.  MORE [+]

Annie Prickett (Bozeman, MT) set up what proved to be the winning goal for the Loggers in the 14th minute to give them a two goal lead at the time.

The Bears grabbed the initial lead 17 minutes into the contest when Nolan Sherwood found Marco Kummerle but had to settle for a draw with the Beacons tallying at the hour mark.  MORE [+]

In the 87th minute Brett Butler (Yakima, WA / CC Spokane) converted a penalty to give SOU the draw.

The Mountaineers dominated the contest outshooting the visiting Lions 29-3. Daniel Silva scored the lone goal of the first half in the 13th minute. Jesus Pelayo (Blackfoot, ID / Treasure Valley CC) scored two to open the second half, tallying in the 50th and again in the 57th. Taylor Willman (Bend, OR) closed things out in the 67th. Carroll College 1 :: 0 Great Falls
The two sides were locked in a stalemate that was decided by a mistake in the 44th minute that the Saints pounced on for what proved to be the deciding tally. Ryan Van Pevenage (Great Falls, MT) intercepted the ball while the Argos were switching the ball along the back line and beat Marc Girones, who had three saves otherwise, in a one-on-one breakaway. Miguel Viramontes (Wenatchee, WA) scored the second goal of the contest in the 67th minute with a header off the crossbar to provide some insurance.

Northwest Christian 4 :: 3 College of Idaho
The contest was scoreless for 40 minutes before the Beacons opened the scoring in the 43rd minute on a turnover. After that, it turned into a goal-fest. Cole Fuller (Boise, ID) and Darion Green (Meridian, ID) combined in the 54th minute to set up Carter Perry (Boise, ID), evening things up for the Yotes. The Beacons reclaimed the lead in the 60th and pushed it to two in the 66th. After a 20-minute lull, Northwest Christian tallied what proved to be the winner int he 86th with the Perry tallying on a Cole Fuller cross in the 87th and a strike from Sid Rayne (Star, ID / North Idaho College) in the 90th.  MORE [+]

Leading the scoring in the blowout was Micah Hill, who tallied three goals and  two assists in the contest. Scoring twice in the match were Robert Wilson (Boise, ID / North Idaho College), Elvis Pavon, Oscar Munoz and Anthony Leavens. Backup keeper Aiden Wright made two saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]

The Bears fell behind in the 43rd minute but answered quickly, netting with just one second left on the clock via Nolan Sherwood. In the second half Marco Kummerle wasted little time putting the Bears in the lead with a strike in the 50th minute followed by his second in the 61st.  MORE [+]

The visitors posted an early two goal lead with back-to-back strikes in the 15th and 18th minutes, but the Bears fought back. Lauryn Gamache found Brittany Greenback for the first in the 28th minute to reduce the gap before halftime. An own goal in the third minute of the second half brought the Bears level and Mhari Smith struck for the game-winner four minutes into extra time.

Corban 2 :: 1 College of Idaho 
The Warriors scored on a deflection in the 15th minute and pushed the lead to two with a rebound putaway off a saved penalty in the 55th minute. Katelyn Benavidez answered quickly from long range for the Yotes in the 56th minute on a ball from Reilly Coyle (Boise, ID), but were unable to find an equalizer.  MORE [+]

Malena Lennon put the Argos in front four minutes before the break and despite the visiting Saints vastly outshooting them, goalkeeper Kyra Dorvall (Helena, MT) was doing well to keep them off the board. Her fortunes would come to an end, though, in the 79th when Michaela Kueffler (Billings, MT) finished a loose ball from close range to even things up. Jamiece Yizar and Katelyn Benavidez led the Yotes to the victory, combining twice. Benavidez fed Yizar 23 minutes into the match for the opener and Maddie Brown (Greenleaf, ID / CC Spokane) scored on the follow-up of a blocked corner two minutes before the break. Benavidez redirected a free kick in the 74th to Yizar for the final goal. Brittany Houghton made seven saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]
