HS DAILY - 10.18.16: EV clinched GNL title Saturday plus new 509 Power Rankings & NEW playoff brackets

East Valley, not surprisingly, cruised to a 4-0 victory in their morning match-up with last-place Pullman Saturday. Later in the day, Clarkston posted a 2-0 shutout victory in Cheney that moved them into second in the league and locked up first place in the Great Northern League for the EV Knights, who have a seven and eight point leads over the duo of Clarkston and Cheney, who both only have two games remaining.

Down in the Mid-Columbia Conference, Hanford won its eighth consecutive match 2-0 at Kennewick to remain even with Southridge, which won 9-0 against Walla Walla, atop the table heading into the final week of the season.

This is the final week for most of the 509 leagues with the exception of the Columbia Basin Big Nine, whose postseason is independent from neighboring districts.

The MCC will be determining the seeding for all of its members and the GSL for all but one 4A side as the two leagues head directly into the GSL-MCC Regional Tournaments with the elimination of the district tournaments that each league previously held. Also new is a mult-region crossover play-in for the 3A schools due to the drop in numbers from eight to seven following Hanford's move up to 4A. In order for the GSL-MCC schools to have a shot at two state berths, the regional winner will have to spot its spot on the line as they and the runner-up face the fifth seed out of Metro and the second seed from KingCo - the two greater Seattle districts. The cross-over format was finalized and approved last week by the WIAA and all of the districts involved.

Also new this season is the reduction in postseason schedule for the Northeast A League and CBBN. Only the top four in each of those leagues will move onto the postseason compared to six a year ago.

The Great Northern League playoffs and its crossovers with the CWAC will remain the same.

Here's a look around the action from Saturday...

GNL #####

Clarkston 2-0 Cheney:  After a scoreless first half, Taylen Wohl found Makinzie Packwood two minutes into the second for her 14th goal of the GNL season. Eight minutes later Maddie Hoffman scored her first in league play as some insurance. Kately Bittle made five saves in the Bantams their second shutout of the campaign.

Pullman 0-4 East Valley:  Micaela Verdal scored two goals in the first half with Charity Yount and Chloe Gellhous putting the match out of reach in the second. Sydney Moore set up the opener just two minutes into the contest and Yount found Verdal for the second six minutes later. Pullman kept them off the board the rest of the half and for a while in the second before the Knights got back-to-back strikes. Shannon Frucci found hit Yount for the third in the 55th and Gellhaus capped things two minutes later thanks to Kaitlin Harvey. Kari Bromley recorded her sixth shutout of the season.

MCC #####

Hanford 2-0 Kennewick:  Taylor Matheny led the Falcons to the win, delivering a corner eight minutes in that Blake Danna put away for the lead and scoring herself at the close of the half she scored the the second. She sent a shot on goal from the left side that was blocked by a defender, but Matheny seemlessly switched to her left foot to strike the rebound home. Kelsee Winston and Gabby Turner combined for the shutout.

Walla Walla 0-9 Southridge: The league leaders cruised to the victory with McKaley Goffard scoring three of the first four goals. A corner from Haley Thomas was redirected by Kendall Pope and put away by Morgan Nelson for the opening goal five minutes in. From there it was the Goffard show. Savannah Brown found her two minutes later and then Syd Sanders connected with the star striker in the 11th and 20th. Nelson fed Grace Griffiths in the 35th and Thomas fed Goffard for her fourth int he 38th to give the Suns a six goal lead at the break. Emily Russell set up all three second half goals, finding Nelson for back-to-back strikes int eh 71st and 73rd and Emma Schutt for the final goal four minutes from time. Tiara Valadez and Kayleen Sambrano combined for the shutout.
