DI / DII ROUND-UP: Washington State just short of road upsets over ranked opponents

The Boise State Broncos moved to 3-0-0 in the Mountain West Friday before suffering their first defeat and Idaho State posted a remarkable turnaround in the Big Sky, but one of the marquee stories among the Division I schools in the region may have been Washington State's PAC-12 road trip. The Cougars left Pullman with two tough ranked opponents on their slate and nearly registered surprise results against top-ranked Stanford and 17th ranked California only come up on the wrong end of one-goal decisions.

At the Division II level, the Central Washington women posted a pair of victories to move up the Great Northwest Athletic Conference table. On the men's side of the GNAC five of the six matches went to extra time last week. MSU-Billings won both games on the road while Northwest Nazarene earned a win and a draw away from home.

Washington State 1 :: 2 Stanford (1)
The Cougars started thinking upset when their PAC-12 road opener at top-ranked Stanford hit the hour mark scoreless just moments after Maegan O'Neill (Spokane, WA) made huge goal-line clearing header in the 59th minute. However, just over two minutes later the hosts grabbed the lead. Kaitlyn Johnson's possible EWU equalizer in the 64th hit the crossbar, and in the 78th minute Averie Collins (Bozeman, MT) struck for what proved to be the winning goal. Morgan Weaver beat a defender and fired from the edge of the box to score for the Cougs, but the 89th minute goal proved too late for them to complete the rally.  MORE [+]

It was a game of two completely different halves. It was a scoreless stalemate for the first 45, but in the second half the two sides fired back-and-forth to the point of going to overtime. Logan Wood put NNU back in front in the 76th, but the lead again only lasted five minutes. Extra time, however, did not last long with Michael Mollay (Spokane Shadow MFT) finding Mitrovic just 15 seconds after kickoff for the game-winner.  MORE [+]
