College Notebook 10.20.18 - Eags & Griz Stay Alive in Big Sky Race with Late Goals

Five teams went into Friday's contests looking to grab the final two berths in the Big Sky and four were in contention for the regular season title. The day's results finished with Eastern Washington handing Northern Arizona its first loss, keeping the Eagles in postseason contention and eliminating the Lumberjacks from the title race - a big favor for rival Idaho. Montana also kept its postseason hopes alive with a win at Portland State, the other member of the now three teams left with a shot at those two coveted spots.

Here's a recap of Friday's action...

## Women's Scores & Notes ##

Big Sky Conference - Standings

Eastern Washington 1-0 Northern Arizona :: Thanks to a season full of one-goal decisions that had gone the wrong way the defending Big Sky champs were on the ropes. They have come out swinging, however, after losing three consecutive. As if they cleaned the slate with their 8-1 thumping of Idaho State last week, the Eagles went to Arizona and handed the Lumberjacks their first loss of the season, spoiling their chance of winning the league title. Jenny Chavez broke a lengthy stalemate between the two when she headed in a ball from Emma Vanderhyden in the 71st minute. At the other end Kelsee Winston (Pasco, WA) made six saves for the shutout.

Montana 1-0 Portland State :: Locked in a stalemate with the fellow postseason contenders, the Grizzlies got a bit of fortune in the 57th when the hosts went down to 10 players after goalkeeper Abbie Faingold was sent off after a knees up challenge well outside the box that left McKenzie Warren, who was chasing down a long ball, motionless after the collision. The Griz continued to put the pressure on back-up Tiegan Horton (Coeur d'Alene, ID / North Idaho College) and broke through in the 71st when Janessa Fowler sent a ball up the right side that Alexa Coyle (Bozeman, MT) collected and fired with pace inside the far post.  Claire Howard made four saves for the shutout.

Idaho 2-0 Southern Utah :: Defender Kelly Dopke is proving to be an offensive threat of late for the Vandals. She scored her second goal in the last four games to open the scoring in the 36th minute for the Vandals, nodding in a ball from Morgan Crosby (Spokane, WA). Forty seconds later Claire Johnson found Myah Merino for some insurance as Idaho dominated the Thunderbirds with an 18-8 advantage in shots. Makayla Presgrave (Saint Maries, ID) would finish with five saves for the shutout. A victory Sunday at NAU would give Idaho a share of the Big Sky title and the number one seed based on their win over Weber State last week.

Weber State 5-3 Idaho State :: The Bengals had the misfortune of hosting the league leading Wildcats for their finale, but the game was a bit of a thriller. After falling behind in the sixth minute Meaghan Bare (Coeur d'Alene, ID) put things back level via Delaney Johnston in the 27th. Back-to-back goals in the 36th and 37th, though, put the Wildcats up two at the break. They made it three in the 59th before Tristen Spooner two consecutive in the 62nd and 73rd to make it a one-goal contest for the final 17 minutes. WSU would not get their insurance until the final seconds of the match.

Northern Colorado 3-1 Sacramento State :: A late goal from Caitlin Prothe (Spokane, WA) on a breakaway with less than five minutes remaining was not enough to keep the Hornets alive as their three goal deficit was too much to make up.

Pac-12, Mountain West & West Coast Conferences

WCC - Portland 2-3 (OT) Santa Clara :: Kelsey Turnbow (Spokane, WA) set up the opening goal for the Broncos in the 24th minute, but the Pilots tied it up with a penalty six minutes later and took the lead in the 53rd with a fantastic strike from Larkin Russell (Spokane, WA) in the 53rd. Kelcie Hedge (Post Falls, ID), though, put things back level again in the 72nd with the match running to overtime where Turnbow gave the hosts the victory in the second minute on a penalty.

WCC - Gonzaga 1-1 San Francisco :: The Bulldogs kept their streak going, extending it to four unbeaten (3-0-1). The Dons took the lead in the 56th with defender Jodi Ulkekul ripping a shot from about 25 yards for the equalizer in the 81st.

MW - Fresno State 2-1 Boise State :: The Broncos suffered their first loss of the season in the contest, but still have an excellent chance to win the Mountain West courtesy of San Jose State - who the Broncos face Sunday - also playing to a tie on the day. BSU found themselves in a hole 33 minutes in when a confounding second yellow to Aubree Chatterton (Boise, ID) left them with 10 players. The Bulldogs would get on the board three minutes into the second half with McKenna Kynett evening things up in the 61st on a penalty. Another pk decided the outcome for the hosts three minutes later.

Corban 0-1 Eastern Oregon :: Taylor Boyer scored the deciding goal for the Mountaineers, running up the right side and receiving a through ball from Abri Cardenas in the 49th minute. The defense was huge for EOU as they did not allow a shot on goal for Cydni Cottrell (Pasco, WA) to handle.
