NWAC East Tonight 10.3.18: Hawks Upend Yaks; Walla Walla Sweeps Knights

It was a light night across the division on the night with just three games, but there was plenty of drama with the road teams all heading home with wins. Columbia Basin surprised Yakima Valley to hand them their second loss of the season. Meanwhile, Walla Walla swept Wenatchee Valley in a doubleheader. The Warrior ladies used their win to pull even with the Yaks while the men put some space between themselves and the second-place Knights.

WOMEN

Walla Walla 3-1 Wenatchee Valley :: The hosts held the lead at the break on a Yalina Vargas (Brewster, WA) goal in the 36th, but Walla Walla controlled matters in the second half, outshooting the Knights 9-2. Klarissa Baraja (Kennewick, WA) tied it up in the 55th and Pua Kauhaihao put them in front in the 67th. Hailey Hill (Boise, ID) added some insurance in the 87th.

Columbia Basin 3-1 Yakima Valley :: A free kick gave the visiting Hawks the initial lead in the 23rd minute when Kiani Hill (Idaho Falls, ID) headed it onto Elena Mendoza (Othello, WA) for the finish. The celebration was short-lived though as the host Yaks answered just three minutes later when Courtney Handlen (Pocatello, ID) found Harley Hendry (Hauser, ID) at the top of the box, where she beat a defender and fired near post. The Hawks would reclaim the lead four minutes before the break on an own goal in which the ball deflected in off a defender. A hand ball in the second half gave CBC the opportunity to grab some insurance in the 59th when Danielle Chang fired a free kick from just outside the box into the upper corner. The Hawks defense helped keep the Yaks at bay, limiting them to just three shots in the game.

Notes: Bailey Johnson (Idaho Falls, ID) set up the opening goal for Lane in a 6-0 win at Rogue.
