HS UPDATE 10.11.18: Prep Falls at Mead; Deer Park Gets Key Win

Tuesday and Wednesday night's action featured a few marquee match-ups with contenders squaring off in the Greater Spokane League, Northeast A League and Great Northern League. Mead kept themselves in the GSL title race with a win against unbeaten Gonzaga Prep, Deer Park essentially locked up the NEA with a win at Lakeside and East Valley created some space as well in the GNL with a win over rival West Valley.

Mead's victory Wednesday evening against unbeaten Gonzaga Prep is invoking a bit of deja vu from two seasons ago in which the top teams took wins off one another as nobody went unscathed through the regular season. The Panthers lost earlier this season to Central Valley, who will host the Bullpups next week. Two years ago Mead downed both during the season, the Bears defeated Gonzaga Prep and Lewis and Clark stuck a toe in the mix and tripped up Mead, creating a tie between CV and Mead at 8-1.

Deer Park and East Valley's victories created two-game gaps for both sides in their respective leagues. The Lady Stags still have to play a banged up Freeman side next week, but the extra space and lack of competition from the rest of the league essentially ensures their regular season title despite the result of that game, barring any crazy upset situations. East Valley, meanwhile, has more games remaining in their campaign, including another showdown against each of their fellow contenders - one at Cheney and the finale at home against the Eagles.

Oh, and Tuesday's action in the MCC proved to be another largely uneventful evening, although Chiawana needed to rally against Hanford on the road for their win. The Riverhawks, though, only trailed for about a minute.

Pasco 1-5 Walla Walla :: A free kick from Smith was finished by Lash nine minutes in and Coburn hit from outside the box midway through the half. Smith went on to tally two in the second half with Lash nodding in a corner from Coburn to round things out after Pasco had converted a penalty.

Southridge 0-4 Kamiakin :: Suns keeper Alyssa Masterson made some spectacular saves on the night, but the number of shots coming at her were too many and the Braves rolled to another win. Defender Brielle Schneider scored another fantastic long-range strike from about 40 yards and Britney Donais, the usual assist maker, finished with the hat-trick on the night.

Ferris 3-2 Shadle Park :: In what was a very evenly played contest the Saxons tallied the lone goal of the first half when Keelie Ward fired from the edge of the box with five minutes remaining. It looked like the Highlanders, though, were going to register a big upset that could play a huge role in the 3A seeding race when Olivia Wicks scored back-to-back goals four minutes apart. She slipped through the back line and put the equalizer on the board in the 58th and then later chested down a poor goal kick and drove to goal to put them in front, but had to wave off her teammates for celebration as she had knocked it down around her sternum and somehow managed to have enough energy to get the goal before being feeling the pain. The joy of the moment, however, would not have lasted long anyhow as the Saxons immediately tied it right back up within a minute with Avery Sison scoring from the left side at the other end in the 62nd minute. Five minutes later Yacine Bitibale would strike for the winner on a fantastic play, receiving the ball with her back to goal. With the defender on her back she spun and fired from the top of the box, hitting the upper corner.

##  Northeast A League  ##

Deer Park 4-1 Lakeside :: A foul on Jessie Thomas inside the first half-minute allowed the Lady Stags to grab an early lead when Emmy Moore struck a perfect free kick from about 40 yards out that dropped into the far upper left corner just 40 seconds into the match. Thomas would give them firm control of the back-and-forth affair by converting from the spot four minutes before the break. A penalty five minutes into the second half put away by Lexi Torok gave the Eagles some inspiration but a short corner from Thomas was dropped in over the keeper into the far side netting by Moore to restore the two goal margin. Moore would find Thomas for the only goal in the contest not via a set piece with five minutes left.

ERRORS?... NUDGE YOUR COACH -- If you see missing/incorrect info from your games, please urge your coach to send the post-game info to INWsn (its either because I did not receive it or alternative source was wrong). In addition to match coverage, I use this info and suggestions from coaches for my HS Best XI selections each week. Each year I reach out to the area coaches requesting post-game reports with basic stats.  Tell them you want INWsn coverage!!
