College Notebook 10.8.18

Here's a recap of the weekend's action...

## Women's Scores & Notes ##

Pac-12, Mountain West & West Coast Conferences

WCC - Saint Mary's 0-3 Gonzaga :: The Zags command against the Gaels early when India Jencks drove up the left side and fired a shot from the left edge of the box that the keeper missed at the near post as she dove for it, allowing it to deflect off the woodwork and the backside of her leg before narrowly going over the line before a defender could reach it. Then just three minutes later centerback Ariana Pumpelly drove up the middle and fired a laser from long range into the upper corner. The Bulldogs locked up the result - their first three-game conference win streak since 2014 - and allowed them to play some younger players with Jencks and McKenna Ferrera combining to set up Brooke Weedman for the final tally.

WCC - Pacific 1-4 Portland :: With the team leading by one Russell Larkin (Spokane, WA) set up the final two goals for the Pilots in the second half to lock up the result.

MW - Boise State 1-0 San Diego :: The Broncos picked up their first victory over powerhouse San Diego since 2014 and their first-ever on the road, moving to 5-0-1 in the Mountain West with five games remaining. Freshman defender Macie Nelson (Boise, ID) made a great play to bring down a corner kick and poke it home in the 52nd minute. Tara Fisher made five saves for the shutout.

PAC-12 - Washington State 0-1 Utah :: The Cougars' fantastic run came to a close as they suffered their first loss of the season in a tight contest that saw just seven combined shots on target. The Utes grabbed the lead off a cross nine minutes in and made it stand with their keeper making four saves.

Makayla Presgrave (Saint Maries, ID) made seven saves for the shutout as Idaho moved to 3-1-1.

Montana 1-2 Weber State :: The Wildcats scored 28 minutes in but a penalty converted by Janessa Fowler in the 41st evened things up before the break. Six minutes into the second half, however, the hosts jumped back in front and held on for the win.

Amy Hatter put things level 55 seconds into the second half and it looked like the pair could go the distance deadlocked, but a deflected pass fell to freshman Kalyn Gill for her first career goal in the 84th minute.

Saturday - Lewis & Clark 0-3 Whitman :: Pagan Hetherington put away a cross from Emily Rigsby (Boise, ID) with just over two minutes remaining in the first half and Sofia Ellington (Bend, OR) scored twice in a quick burst early in the second half to lock up the result. The hosts, though, found an equalizer off a corner kick with Maddie Brown (Greenleaf, ID / CC Spokane) nodding it in to tie it up in the 83rd.

Western Washington 5-0 Northwest Nazarene :: Minus quite a few players from injuries and suspension the Nighthawks were no match for the Vikings, who tallied twice in the first half and three more after the break.

Northwest Conference - Standings

Whitman 2-1 (OT) Whitworth :: A year ago when the two met in Spokane for the season finale, it proved to be a thriller in the snow in which the Blues took the contest well into overtime. Saturday's meeting again saw the two rivals play extra time with a dramatic finish. Jacob Barsher put Austin Betschart on a breakaway in the final seconds of the first half with the 15-yard strike coming with just 17 seconds remaining. Whitworth would finally get on the board with 19 minutes remaining when Ethan Kem perfectly placed a free kick from about 20 yards into the upper right corner. The match would roll into overtime, but was quickly decided when a long free kick into the box was headed from the right side into the middle, falling in the path of Joe Thompson for a first-time finish just 89 seconds in. The result puts the Blues at 5-2-0 in the league and still in the hunt for the league title behind 7-0-0 Willamette.

Pacific 0-2 George Fox :: Moises Manon (Milton-Freewater, OR) scored the second goal in the 90th minute for the Bruins.

Cascade Collegiate Conference - Standings

Carroll 2-1 College of Idaho :: An hour-plus of scoreless soccer was followed by a dramatic finish. Jose Porras fed Nick Lowrimore with a through ball for the opener in the 69th minute to put the Saints in front and it looked like there were gonna get the road win, but Adam Prskavec tied it up on a through ball from Lucas Thorne (Kuna, ID) with 76 seconds remaining in the contest. Less than two minutes into overtime Lowrimore returned the favor, finding Porras with an angled cross for the game-winner.

Eastern Oregon 2-2 Evergreen State :: Marcos Borja (Kennewick, WA / Walla Walla CC) put the host Geoducks on the board 22 minutes into the match, but the Mountaineers answered quickly with Josh Goodman nodding in a cross from Carlos Solorio. With 11 minutes left in the match a solo run from Solorio put EOU in front when he took advantage of the keeper slipping, but a corner from Emilio Meraz-Rodriguez (Pasco, WA) was headed in by Quinn Landrud for the draw in the 85th.

Walla Walla University 2-4 Northwest University :: Mikias Repsold (Spokane, WA) put the Eagles on the board 19 minutes in and set up the second goal in the 25th. Noah Prophet (Cheney, WA) would create the third two minutes later before WWU replied with a goal from Carlos Cantu in the 37th. The Eagles would get one more in the second half before the Wolves got their second from Emmett Sample (Corvallis, MT)

Southern Oregon 2-0 Warner Pacific :: Kelly Gieber (Bend, OR) scored the second goal for the Raiders.
