HS UPDATE 10.15.18: Lakeside Edges Freeman in OT; Dramatic Friday in GSL

The second half of the week saw some key contests and results throughout all three of the Spokane-area leagues as the regular season nears a close. Tight contests highlighted the results, including one upset in the GSL as North Central landed a big win over a 4A side that affected the postseason picture going into the final week.

With a week to go in the season the seeding for the Northeast A League was pretty much settled Thursday evening with Lakeside winning a dramatic contest at Freeman on a golden goal from Emma Spence in overtime. It was a valiant effort from a Scotties side to attempt to stay in the mix for the second seed as they continue suffer injuries.

The Eagles, with a six point lead over Freeman, are back within three points of Deer Park, but would need the unbeaten Stags to lose both of their games next week.

The picture is also becoming more solidified in the Great Northern League as East Valley posted a 3-1 win at Cheney, which lost against the two valley sides in two consecutive outings. The Knights, at 8-1, are now a game clear of West Valley with a game in hand and two from the Blackhawks, who were early challengers for the league title. West Valley kept the Knights in range though with a dramatic overtime win in a back-and-forth affair at Clarkston Saturday.

On Friday, there were a number of close matches that could and did have an impact on the postseason picture. Central Valley squeaked out a narrow 1-0 win against Mt Spokane to remain perfect while Gonzaga Prep remained just one back in advance of their showdown next week, but University gave them a battle in a 2-1 contest. Mead, though, was knocked out of the title contention and left a game back of the Bullpups as North Central registered the first big upset by a 3A side over one of the top 4A sides. The victory gave NC a huge boost in their race for the 3A title as they pulled even with Mt Spokane going into the final week.

Southridge 0-4 Chiawana :: A fantastic free kick from Kylee Alvarez broke the stalemate about eight minutes into the second half when Zyree Raban put it away. She then found Sydnee Suarez, who lobbed one over the keeper in the 20th. The Riverhawks added two more late with Alia Khoyi finishing a deflected pass from Raban with about five minutes left and Rebeka Haertling knocking a loose ball home on a scramble in the box following a free kick in the final moments.

## Greater Spokane League ##

University 1-2 Gonzaga Prep :: The Bullpups had the better of the possession in the contest, but Kelsey Crosby put up a fight working throughout to create opportunities for the Titans. Kyah Le, though, gave the hosts the initial advantage with a fantastic strike 18 minutes in, collecting a foiled corner kick and letting loose as she drove along the top of the box and finding the upper corner. Four minutes after a goal-line save from University's Peyton Bastine, the Titans would tie it up on a free kick from 45 yards out near the right touchline that Grace Rogers dropped in under the crossbar out of Eden Elliot's reach. Shortly into the second Chelsea Le scored a goal similar to her sister for the win, driving through the penalty arc and unleashing a rocket at the edge of the box that whistled under the crossbar.

Mead 0-1 North Central :: Payton Flannery made six saves to keep the Panthers off the board and the hosts got a goal from Izzy Garcia early in the second half courtesy of a build-up from Quincy McDeid and Makenzie Letsch. She collected a deflected pass and hit the upper corner for what stood as the winner in the biggest upset of the season thus far.

"We really tried to disrupt their game in the midfield as well as put a good amount of pressure on their back line," said NC coach Matt Leonard. "We played much better today and committed to blocking passing lanes and then being more composed on the ball. Super proud and impressed with all of our team. Took a full team effort."

Shadle Park 0-2 Lewis & Clark :: Handicapped by a number of injuries and absences, the Tigers relied upon Carolyn Moravec for a second consecutive win.  After sending a cross to JV call-up Rachael Lee, Moravec received a return pass right in front of the goal to give LC the early lead.  In the second half, Moravec took a pass from Erynn Gores near midfield and proceeded on a 50-yard run past the Shadle Park defense before sneaking one in from a tight angle.  Despite a valiant effort in attack from the Highlanders, the combo of Jessie Quacquarini and Erin Carney held things together for the shutout.

##  Northeast A League  ##

Lakeside 1-0 (OT) Freeman :: The injuries woes continue for the Scotties, who lost several more players - in addition to the game - from their back line along with star striker Lindsay Balkenbush, who left the game after just 15 minutes. Despite a makeshift back line, Freeman held their ground with Hannah Pylant making a dozen saves, but the 13th made its way past her when Emma Spence got past her defender on the left side a minute into overtime and slipped by for the victory. The result was only the second time Freeman had been shutout this season, both times by Lakeside.
