GAMEDAY - NWAC East Tonight 9.13.17: Big Wins for Columbia Basin & Spokane

On the first full day of divisional play in the NWAC East Wednesday evening there were plenty of one-sided affairs with CC Spokane and Columbia Basin College posting sweeps of visiting Wenatchee Valley and Blue Mountain. It was the second sweep of the week thus far for CBC, which took two in against Wenatchee Valley Monday in a pair of rescheduled games.

In the two close contests of the night, the North Idaho College women escaped a scare in a 1-0 win against visiting Yakima Valley College while the Treasure Valley men snared a 1-0 win at Walla Walla.

WOMEN  ##############

9/11 Columbia Basin College 2-1 Wenatchee Valley College :: Rescheduled from an air quality postponement, the Hawks took to the road on Monday and picked up a victory in Wenatchee thanks to a pair of goals from Kaylee Martinez (Othello, WA). She struck 10 seconds before the intermission and added a needed insurance goal in the 84th with the Knights getting on the board less than a minute later through Makenzi Howard.

9/13 Blue Mountain 0-11 Columbia Basin :: Year two does not look to be much better for Blue Mountain. Madison Gatherum (Richland, WA) scored the first goal just 19 seconds into the match and added a goal and assist. Taylor-Ley Ilona Gar tallied the next and then set up the following tally from Cami Pfliger (Richland, WA), who finished with two more goals. Elle Mann (Pocatello, ID) would score three with Taylor Piccione (Meridian, ID) and Gracie Geurts rounding out the scoring. Kaile Kauanui assisted on the last seven goals of the game, finishing with eight total. Janelle Garza (Othello, WA) did not need to make a save in the shutout.

9/13 Treasure Valley 0-4 Walla Walla :: The Warriors scored twice in each half via four different scorers. Madison Brownell (Selah, WA) set up Emily Thornton (Benton City, WA) in the 11th and Sally Culig's (Boise, ID) strike with a minute left in the match. Jennifer Inions (Prosser, WA) doubled the lead in the 31st and Klarissa Barajas (Kennewick, WA) put the match out of reach in the 81st. Two saves were all Paige Kubista (Nampa, ID) needed for the clean sheet.

9/13 Yakima Valley 0-1 North Idaho College :: In a defensive showdown the only difference in the contest was an own goal from the Yaks in the 49th minute of the match as Madison Smith did well with three saves against the host Cardinal in the loss and Kinzie Hunter picked up the win and shutout with six stops.

9/13 Wenatchee Valley 0-4 Spokane :: Jennifer Mendoza (Warden, WA) did well in goal to keep Spokane off the board in the early going, but eventually the Sasquatch broke through, doing so with a bluster. Sabrina Castaneda (Nampa, ID) picked up the ball at midfield and made a run to goal for the opener in the 25th and then just five minutes later Molly Thies (Dryden, WA) was at the post to finish a ball from Sydney Clements (Spokane, WA) for the second. Emma Hartwig (Spokane, WA) got on the end of a Castaneda ball in the 33rd to finish the flurry of scores. Jamie Fassler (Prosser, WA) capped the scoring in the 67th. Michelle Czarapata and Nicole Rowley (Cheney, WA) split the shutout.

9/13 Treasure Valley 1-0 Walla Walla :: A penalty converted by Cristian Muniz (Twin Falls, ID) in the 56th minute was enough for the Chukars to get the road win in Walla Walla with Flavio Betancourt (Pendleton, OR) making three saves in the shutout.

9/13 Wenatchee Valley 1-5 Spokane :: A quick start from a pair of former high school teammates gave Spokane early command. Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez (Pasco, WA) scoring in the opening minute of play and then Hector Magana (Pasco, WA) scored in the sixth and ninth minutes to push the lead to three. Nick Frost made it four in the 38th and Magana fed Meraz-Rodriguez for the final Bigfoot tally in the 81st.
