HS Daily - 9.2.17: Tigers romp against MCC champs

It is just non-league action, but a massive blowout of Mid-Columbia Conference champion Southridge by Lewis & Clark will certainly raise quite a few eyebrows around the region. The Suns lost a dozen seniors from last year's squad, which included their two leading scorers Morgan Nelson and McKaley Goffard (22 combined goals in league play) and starting goalkeeper Tiara Valadez, who led all of eastern Washington among 3A/4A schools in shutouts with eight. In contrast, the Tigers only featured three seniors on its squad last year - one of the smallest group of graduating players among the Greater Spokane League's regular contenders along with Central Valley (2), Mt Spokane (4) and University (4).

Coverage Change: I am disappointed to announce that INWsn - for the time being - is discontinuing its coverage of the Columbia Basin Big Nine. You will probably still see scores reported and INWsn will probably continue to retweet results that come up, but the in-depth coverage - for now - is not returning. Over the course of the past two years it has been extremely difficult to obtain needed information to provide accurate coverage of the league due, in part, to scattered coverage on local newspaper websites (paywalls and missing reports). Unfortunately, those iissues are compounded with a lack of response from nearly everyone at the Big Nine with the exception of one coach (thank you Ryan Massey of West Valley Yakima) despite numerous attempts to reach out to them.

Round-up of the action for September 1...

(3A) Southridge 0-9 Lewis & Clark
In an eye-opening result, the Tigers drubbed last season's MCC regular season champion Suns - and it started quickly with three goals in the first eight minutes. Carolyn Moravec set up Camryn Gardner in the opening minute and tallied herself in the eighth. Gardner set up the second, by Jackie Brown, in the sixth. Claire Mann found Katherine Bourekis in the 14th and Gardner got on the board again in the 28th courtesy of Brown. Paige Malm, who set up Moravec earlier, scored one minute into the second half and Moravec fed Brown 10 minutes later. Gardner added another assist - for two goals, two assists total in the game - on Sophie Doneen's 54th minute tally and Alli Schoultz rounded out the scoring in the 62nd via Katelyn Kenney. Jessica Quacquarini and Erin Carney combined for the shutout.

(2A) Cheney 1-4 Mt Spokane (3A)
Michaela Thompson put the Wildcats on the board via Payton Stiles in the 10th minute, but the Blackhawks answered in the 28th when Lelie Holland found Kaitlin Teeters for the equalizer. The hosts, though, wasted no time re-establishing the lead, with Ellie Johnson tallying two minutes later on a ball from Mackenzie Willett. In the second half Allie Baribault found Allie Lafferty and Johnson to put the match away.

(2A) East Valley 1-3 Ferris (4A)
The game went to the break even with Kaitlyn Oliver scoring via Leighton DeMille in the 11th minute for the Saxons and Chloe Gellhaus scoring the equalizer in the 32nd. Jill Calkins put the hosts back in front in the 57th courtesy of Bailey Warnica and DeMille set up another in the 72nd, finding Yacine Bitibale.

McLaughlin (OR) 0-10 Walla Walla
Cristinia McHie, Lorena Ramirez and Makena Reitz each scored twice as the Blue Devils rolled to the win. Adding goals in the contest were Abi Escalante, Jacquelin Gomez, Reese Fewell and Madison Darnold.
