NWAC East Tonight 9.23.17: Columbia Basin Men, Walla Walla Women Still Perfect in Division

Fifth with a 4-6-5 record a year ago, the Columbia Basin men are enjoying a fantastic start to this season. They picked up their fifth win in as many games Saturday with a 4-2 result against North Idaho to surpass last year's win total. On the women's side Walla Walla is looking like the powerhouse of old after having not finished top two in the division since winning the title in 2013, grabbing a 2-1 win against reigning three-time champion Spokane Saturday to move to 5-0-0.

It was an odd weekend on the ladies side as there was only one first half goal in the four non-Blue Mountain matches. All four games were close matches with North Idaho's win at Columbia Basin the biggest margin of victory at two goals.

MEN  ##############

9/22 Wenatchee Valley 10-2 Blue Mountain
Greysen Gilman (Yakima, WA) scored in the opening minute and after Francisco Moreno doubled things in the 13th he added a second three minutes later. Blue Mountain got on the board in stoppage time via Giovanni Madrigal to cut the hole down to two. Hopes of a rally quickly vanished in the second half. Rafa Barajas (Chelan, WA) scored in the opening minute for the Knights and then Omar Mendoza (Wenatchee, WA) scored back-to-back in the 55th and 56th with Crue Gilman (Yakima, WA) following it up immediately in the 58th. Moreno went on to complete a hat-trick and Gilman added a second, as did Madrigal with a second for the hosts with four minutes left.

9/23 Wenatchee Valley 3-1 Treasure Valley
The Knights grabbed two early with Omar Mendoza scoring in the fourth and Rafa Barajas in the 18th. Zabe Covarrubias (Kuna, ID) got one back for the Chukars in the 34th, but five minutes later was sent off along with WVC's Michael Raya (Yakima, WA). The hosts kept it close for a while - even after a second red to Hadir Saad at the hour mark - until Lenin Guzman (Connell, WA) added some insurance in the 72nd.

9/23 North Idaho 2-4 Columbia Basin
The first half finished even with Israel Gonzalez (Grandview, WA) scoring in the 19th for the hosts and the Cardinals pulling level through Cade Roske (Pocatello, ID) in the 33rd. Gonzalez put the Hawks back in front in the 54th and Jesus Delgado (Yakima, WA) scored twice to put things out of reach with strikes in the 60th, via Gonzalez, and 82nd. Cody Bently (Spirit Lake, ID) scored for NIC in the 89th.

9/23 Spokane 2-1 Walla Walla
Chase Reidt (Spokane, WA) set up Ian Schimandle (Cheney, WA) five minutes into the match and converted a penalty in the second half for the Sasquatch victory. Juan Martinez (Milton-Freewater, OR) scored for the Warriors in the 13th.
